3. Local Communities as Experts
• The Information Age…..
• Opportunity for…
– Bespoke smart design of services – taking account
of unique local circumstances.
– The primary stakeholder – local community – can
also be the most sophisticated authority.
– Break-down of barriers between “experts” and
local people.

5. Making the right decisions about our future
Across all levels of government, business and
society.
Deploying our resources where most needed
and where they will have most positive
impact.
How do we make these decisions and how do
we know we are making the best ones?

Editor's Notes
The 2011 Irish Census took place on 10 April 2011. We published the preliminary population results on 29 June, less than 12 weeks later. We have since been engaged in scanning and capturing data from 45 million pages, a process which was completed in December 2011 and we are now busy preparing the data for publication. We have an intensive publication time table throughout 2012, with a new publication on average very 3 weeks, commencing with the Principal Demographic Results volume at the end of March.
More geographic layers to be added later – eg Garda, HSE areas etc
In circle 22,221 areas (if exclude province)There are 11 different geographies from the State down to 18,488 small areas. We will publish Area Population Statistics down to Atomic Small Area level (50-550 Households, 90% 55-130 occupied households). Allowing the general public to get a statistical profile of their area and specialised users access to Census data for studies, reports and business case analyses.
The small area population report are the most detailed outputs from the census. Data is organised into 15 themes covering a wide range of counts from the number of carers providing over 43 hours a week personal care to the number of households using Liquid petroleum gas for their central heating.
