Pixie Dust
My kids have a couple of DVD’s, Tinkerbell and Thumberlina, with
lots of little fairies in them. You know the sort of thing, little magic
guys about so big with see-through wings. Anyway, in the movies
these fairies are the ones who bring about the change of seasons.
They fly around and sprinkle pixie dust everywhere and that
changes summer to autumn.
I’ve got a bit of a problem with this.
1. No one can show me a fairy or even any pixie dust.
2. Fairies might be a reasonable explanation for the change of
seasons but a bigger question then arises. Where did the
fairies come from?
3. We’ve got a perfectly good explanation for seasons. The earth
has a tilt to its axis and as it revolves around the sun the
intensity of sunlight changes. Fairies are unnecessary.
4. It’s pretty obvious that someone made up the whole story.
Look, their names are right here on the DVD box.
So, in short, I’m a fairy sceptic; an afaerist. If other people want to
believe in fairies, fine, no problem. Although, maybe they should
stay away from jobs like meteorology. And definitely don’t send
them to climate change conferences. Get that wrong and billions of
people will be affected.
The same applies to storks. If you think storks bring babies, good
for you but please stay away from obstetrics. Medical professionals
get better results with the sperm, egg, uterus theory.
Flat earthers shouldn’t become airline pilots. Nasa won’t employ
you if you think the moon is made of cheese.
Which brings me to Sarah Palin. She believes in a giant sky fairy
who made the whole universe.
I’ve got a bit of a problem with that.
1. No one can show me this giant sky fairy.
2. The giant fairy might be a handy explanation for the universe
but a bigger question arises. Where did the giant fairy come
from?
3. The fairy is unnecessary anyway. We can explain the universe
without it.
4. It’s pretty obvious that people made up the whole giant fairy
story.
So I’m still an Afaerist whether the fairies are big or small. But
Sarah Palin not only believes in the fairy,it tells her to do all
sorts of weird stuff. You don’t put people like this in charge of
anything important. Billions of people could be affected.
