Apart from digitising and publishing the National Heritage Board’s own collections we support other Swedish institutions, esp. museums, to distribute their collections more widely. One important collaboration we do this as part of is Europeana. In Europeana the Swedish collections become part of a shared European story. In this presentation I will show a couple of examples where the Bernadotte dynasty made an impression in Swedish and European collections.

Charles XIV John has a significant footprint in archives, libraries
and museum collections. Not only in Sweden but in other European
countries, much of it connected to the Napoleonic wars. The
painting to the left is in reality only 6x4.3 cm! The picture of Oscar I
and family is one of the first photographs of the royal family.
3. Gustav V - first on film and in colour!?

The film where Gustaf V inaugurates a Freemasons’ Lodge in Linköping
is from 1915 och was shown in Dutch cinemas. The colour photos of
Gustaf V, Prince Eugen and then Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf are part of a
series taken at the Stockholm Stadium in 1939.

Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf surprised his Korean hosts by going hands-on
at an excavation he visited. In gratitude, he received a pair of ear-rings
from The Tomb of the Auspicious Phoenix. Those, and other gifts
received, on his journey to East Asia were donated to the Museum of Far
Eastern Antiquities.
5. Folke Bernadotte - fallen in the service of peace

Folke Bernadotte made an impression on history and thus also in
archives, libraries and museums. The institutions continue to
collect materials related to the royal house - here Crown
Princess Victoria inaugurates an exhibition about Folke
Bernadotte.
