Good Morning, welcome to the Socialdesk deep dive.
Who are we?
We are a social entrepreneurship located at the corner of Herman and L Street behind the Town and Country Plaza. We are renovating the old Gulf Winds credit union building and expect to open for memberships later this month.
What is social entrepreneurship?
Social entrepreneurship can be defined as an organization that has the passion of a non-profit and the financial discipline and determination of a business and is working on accomplishing a vision or mission.
What does flourish mean to a social entrepreneur?
It means creating social innovations like creating new strategies to deal with problems, developing new concepts and novel ideas and building better more productive organizations.
Our vision for Socialdesk is to help social impact businesses to flourish.
Flourish is a carefully chosen word. It is frequently used to describe a great garden because it carries the meaning of thriving because of being in a very beneficial environment. At Socialdesk we believe that coworking is a great way to build social entrepreneurs and create social innovations.
What are we doing?
We are building social entrepreneurship through coworking. To us, coworking is a means to an end and not the end in it self.
In 2013 the MIT Journal “Innovations” published an article titled “Building Social Entrepreneurship through the power of coworking”. The full article can be found on the PensacolaSocialdesk.com website.
The article talks about the power of coworking being connecting people and providing the tools, learning and resources they need to succeed.
We will do this through the coworking space itself and organizing and hosting events and classes.
One of the ways that we will connect people is through events. We have a classroom on our second floor that can be used for events as well as the entire first floor including our outdoor patio that can be used for larger and more social events. In the latter case, our 28 foot long copper topped counter will do double duty as a cocktail bar.
Being a coworking space it is natural that we will also connect our members with each other through their daily interactions and collaborations, in particular having a relaxed conversation in one of our three collaboration areas or challenging one another to a game of ping-pong or basketball.
Having a large classroom will allow us to host many different kinds of classes such as cyber-security, adopting cloud technologies, project management and how to become a “B” Corporation and many more. In case you are wondering, a ”B” corp also known as a Benefit corporation are for profit companies that meet high standards of social and environment performance, accountability and transparency.
The Centre for Social Innovation has developed the theory of change model to help answer that question. It can be best understood as a pyramid of three distinct but integrated levels. The first one is…
Space is the foundation and the platform for everything that happens.
Our coworking space is on our first floor. We have shared space for 20 people at our high counter, another 24 at our tables, 8 dedicated desks, 2 day use offices, 3 conference rooms and 2 collaboration zones. Not to mention our competition quality ping-pong table.
Upstairs is our classroom which can hold around 55 people in chairs, 30 people sitting at 15 tables or 22 yoga mats. We also have a mid-sized meeting room that can hold about 15 adjoining our full service kitchen.
The space also needs to be conducive to creativity and collaboration and provide comfortable furniture, whiteboard walls and areas to play and even nap. Here are some photos of our collaboration furniture.
We are not only designed to be fun and welcoming but also to be a fully functioning workspace with all the tools that innovative people need such as very high-speed (dare we say crazy fast) Internet, multi-function copier and fully equipped meeting rooms with flat screen TVs for presentations and video conferencing and high quality speaker phones.
When we say crazy-fast Internet or as Pete may say, crazy-expensive Internet we mean Gigabit. This is a speed that most social entrepreneur’s can only dream about.
The physical location is not the only space that is needed. At Socialdesk we will have a dedicated website that all of our members can use to learn about other members, create community events and create and participate in online groups and collaborate.
The middle of the pyramid is community which develops as people occupy the space and form relationships. The primary commonality that all Socialdesk members have is a social mission and a real commitment to social change. However, communities do not develop automatically by people just occupying the same space.
It takes membership curation, creating and maintaining a culture of innovation, creativity, permission (like it is OK to take naps), fun and authenticity and enabling connections to happen.
Just as we have spent a great deal of time to create a physical environment that is conducive to social innovation we will spend a lot of time to create the social environment through member selection. It starts with our application on our website. We are looking for…
Diverse skills, experience and perspectives so that all members contribute to the community we are building.
Likewise we are working on including a diverse range of social interests.
Another key ingredient for creating and maintaining our community is creating and maintaining our culture. From the first day we have been working on defining our values and publishing it prominently on our website. A lot of these have already driven our space design decisions and daily activities, for example a couple of our values relate to being clean and leaving it like you’d like to find it. Our location has a lot of car and foot traffic and a huge litter problem therefore we have committed to pick up all the litter for a couple of block area around our building each day. This not only helps our location be more attractive but also the entire area. We expect all of our members to buy into our values.
The final key in establishing our community is helping people make connections. This could be from sitting across from someone on our high counter to helping make expresso for someone new, to sharing what you know to having an online discussion it is all about interacting with new ideas, seeing issues from different perspectives and gaining new energy to try, try, try and try again.
The top layer of the pyramid is innovation. That is what emerges when the space and community layers are functioning and interacting. Producing social innovations is our ultimate goal. We are looking forward to accountants talking to artists and web developers talking to lawyers and grant writers. We are eager to celebrate future joint ventures.
