This presentation summarizes common banana diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. It provides details on the symptoms, causal organisms, disease cycles, and favorable conditions of three key diseases: anthracnose, crown rot, and fruit rot. Anthracnose is caused by Colletotrichum musae and infects young fruits, leading to dark brown spots and sunken lesions. Crown rot, caused by Colletotrichum musae, Fusarium spp. and Botryodipiodia theobromae, causes blackening of the crown tissue and rotting during transportation. Fruit rot is caused by Botryosphaeria ribis and has similar symptoms to anthracn
10. Symptoms
1. Infects the young fruits at the distal ends
2. Skin turns dark brown to black
3. Lenticular or diamond shaped
Fig: Anthracnose of banana
11. Ripe fruit Symptom
1. Initially brown spots appear and later become
sunken
2. Tip rot may develop and can rot the entire fruit
but the pulp is not usually affected
12. Disease cycle:
1. Conidia of Colletotrichum musae primarily
over winters on dead banana & banana
plantation microflora
2. In high humid weather and high
temperature(27-300c), infects banana flowers
petioles & leaves
3. Spores spread through wind and affect fruit of
banana .
14. Suitable factors for Anthracnose of Banana
1. High temperature (27-30° C) & high relative
humidity
2. Moist and warm weather during the reproductive
stages
3. Poor drained soil
4. Wet periods for a long time (12 hours or more)
15. Control Measures
1. Clean cultural practices
2. Harvesting at morning because low temperature
helps to minimize disease
3. Avoid injury during transport
16. Chemical control:
4. Spraying the bunches with 1% Bavistin/ Tilt
0.05% solution or any other copper fungicide 4
times at 15 days interval .
5. Dipping in Mancozeb 0.2% for 2-3 minutes
after harvest
18. Symptom of Crown Rot of Banana
1. Initially blackening of the crown tissue of the
fruit
2. The rot may spread into the crown during
transportation
3. Rotting is most noticeable if transport time
exceeds 7 days
22. Fruit Rot of Banana
Causal Organism:Botryosphaeria ribis
23. Fruit Rot of Banana
Anthracnose of banana and fruit of banana is more
or less similar.
In the later stage of anthracnose the whole fruit
become rotting. It is called the fruit rot.
24. Green fruit become rotting in the inner side
Pulp of banana become rotting in the ripening stage
26. Suitable factors for Fruit Rot of Banana
1. High temperature
2. High relative humidity
3. Moist and warm weather during the
reproductive stages
4. Wet periods for a long time
27. Control Measures
1. Clean cultural practices
2. Harvesting at morning because low
temperature helps to minimize disease
3. Avoid injury during transport
