DA’WAH THROUGH
THE VARIOUS TYPES
OF MEDIA
 “Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to
all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma`ruf (all that
Islam orders) and forbidding Al-Munkar (all that Islam
has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful.” [
Al-Imran: 3:104]
 “And strive hard in Allah's cause as you ought to
strive. He has chosen you, and has not laid upon you in
religion any hardship: it is the religion of your father
Ibrahim. He has named you Muslims both before and
in this (Qur'an), that the Messenger may be a witness
over you and you be witnesses over mankind! So,
perform the Salah, give the Zakah and hold fast to
Allah. He is your Mawla, what an Excellent Mawla and
what an Excellent Helper!.” [Hajj: 78]

 “The believers, men and women, are Awliyaa‟
(helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one
another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma„roof
(i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam
orders one to do), and forbid (people) from
Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all
kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden)”
[al-Tawbah 9:71]

 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said: “Convey from me even if it is (only) one
aayah (verse).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari) [Bukhari]

 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said: “Whoever among you sees an evil action, let
him change it with his hand [by taking action]; if he
cannot, then with his tongue [by speaking out]; and if
he cannot, then with his heart [by at least hating it and
believing that it is wrong], and that is the weakest of
faith.” Narrated by Muslim

Print
media
Audio Video
Electronic
Media
Print media can be classified into
non-periodical and periodical
Non-periodical consists of literature:
pamphlets, booklets, books, etc.
Periodical consists of newspaper,
magazines, newsletters, etc.
PRINT MEDIA
Digital Audio tapes
Audio compact discs
Audio cassettes
Popular audio media
Audio
The audio media can be used at
different levels:
Individual
• A person can
listen when
travelling in
cars, at
home, office, whi
le walking, or
moving.
Group
• Audio media can
be used to
convey the
message to a
group of family
members, social
and cultural
gatherings.
Public
• Audio media can
be utilized to
reach a
multitude of
people through
radio broadcast.
Popular video media
Video cassettes
Video compact Discs- VCD
Digital video Discs- DVD
Video media too, like audio media, can be used
to convey the message to an individual or to a
group of people
 Electronic media or computer media is
another media that can be used to convey
the message to an individual or group of
people. It can be used at a public level
through the internet by way of web sites,
homepages, bulletin boards, e-mail
messages, etc.
 Electronic media can be stored on hard
discs, diskettes or floppies, compact discs-
CD ROMs, digital video discs- DVD
Retention levels of different
media
Research has shown that different media have different percentage of retention
of the message conveyed.
Retention
Print media
Audio
Visual
Video
Impact and retention of media
Print media- an average person when he reads any
material he remembers approximately 10% of what he
has read
• Audio- an average person when he hears any message he
remembers approximately 20% of what he has heard
Visual- an average person when he sees anything he
retains or remembers approximately 30% of what he
has seen
• Video- if an average person sees and hears a particular message he
remembers about 50% of what he has seen and heard. The
maximum retention is in the audio-video since both the senses of
sight and hearing are involved in grasping the message conveyed.
 Print media, audio, video, and electronic
media, are mainly modes of one-way
communication (i.e. conveying the message in one
direction only without interaction and clarification
from the person who receives the message. It is
more of a monologue than a dialogue.
 A very minute portion of these media can be
converted into an interaction or a dialogue. For
instance, a question and answer column in the
periodical of the print media or a live question and
answer session via the
telephone, radio, television, or live chatting on the
internet.
Choosing the correct mediums for
each culture
Average American spends many hours staring at the
television. So, for the west it would be great to provide
lots of Islamic channels on the satellite dish.
In Arab countries, people read the newspapers or
newsletters on weekly basis. It will be a good idea to
have a separate page in the newsletters or the
newspapers about Islamic events, teaching of the
prophet (PBUH), etc. For reminding the Muslims of
their duty to Islam.
RADIO PROGRAMS
 Muslims producing radio programs are
very rare.
 If Islamically-oriented programming
could be accomplished in areas of high
Muslims concentration, then a great
service will have been rendered to the
Ummah and to Da’wah.
 For instance, podcasting the Quran with
translation on the airwaves, Muslim talk
shows, and news from the Muslim
perspective.
Good ways to make da’wah!
• Give a subscription to an Islamic magazine
to someone as a gift or donate the amount
of the subscription to a da‟wah office.
Magazine
subscriptions
• Include brief Islamic announcements and
reminders on common utility bills like
telephone, water, etc.
Bill
advertisements
• Catchy Islamic saying or slogans can be
printed on calendars, agendas, car
windows, plastic shopping bags, etc.
Islamic slogans
Good ways to make da’wah!
• Arrange for the posting of stickers containing
beneficial Islamic reminders in appropriate
locations like the mosque, riding vehicles in
buses, airplanes.
Stickers
• Design post cards with attractive local scenes
or land marks with brief Islamic message on
the back . For example, a post card with a
picture of a date farm could have on the back a
Quranic reference to the water cycle.
Post
cards
• Select da‟wah articles from books or lectures
from the tapes and reprint them as leaflets and
flyers for various occasions like people going to
hajj, for workers, Eid Ramadan, weddings.
Leaflets
and flyers
Success of the media
• The use of the media has become one of the most
successful and beneficial means of communication in
this age. This is due to its popularity and it being a
weapon with two edges.
• If the media, such as radio, newspapers, and
television, are used for giving da‟wah, and for guiding
people to Allah and what the prophet (PBUH) has
brought, then this is a great thing which can benefit
the Ummah wherever they are, by the permission of
Allah (SWT).
• It can also benefit the non-Muslims in helping them
understand Islam and comprehend it, learn about its
merits and know that it is the path to success in this
world and in the hereafter.
Important point!
It is obligatory for the da‟ey (caller) to
contribute in giving da‟wah in every way he
can, through the use of
radio, newspaper, television and in speeches
giving in gatherings on Ju‟mah as well as on
other days.
This can be done in all languages used by
people, so that da‟wah and advice can reach
them wherever they are in the world.
