PowerPivot demand has increased significantly in recent years. As more and more data gets added to SharePoint or other business systems, business users are recognizing the value that PowerPivot has as an analysis tool. SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 provide a fantastic infrastructure for PowerPivot, but installing and configuring it specifically tailored to your environment can be tricky, depending on your business users' needs. In this session we will walk through an installation of a SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services Instance in SharePoint PowerPivot mode. We will then cover how to install and configure PowerPivot on SharePoint. This includes the configuration options for authentication, data refresh and Excel Services.
As users increasingly leverage PowerPivot for Excel they will want to do it in SharePoint Excel Services tooFor Excel 2010, PowerPivot is a free add-inFor Excel 2013, PowerPivot is built in.
In a typical PowerPivot SharePoint installation there are two SQL Server Instances (They do not have to be on the same SQL Server):A database instance for the PowerPivot and Secure Store service applicationsAn Analysis Services instance for PowerPivot, which basically acts as the PowerPivot add in for Excel ServicesThere are three service applications installed on SharePoint:Secure Store Service Application – claims-aware authorization service that stores and retrieves credentialsExcel Services Service Application – Browser based Excel for SharePointPowerPivot Service Application – Primarily responsible for scheduled data refresh and usage statisticsNote that Analysis Services and Excel Services are the only thing required to view PowerPivot workbooks in SharePoint 2013. The other components give you:The PowerPivot GalleryThe Administrator’s DashboardUsage StatisticsScheduled Data RefreshResources:http://www.sharepointdoug.com/2013/04/powerpivot-component-overview.htmlhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210692.aspx
Notice that there is no Excel Database. Excel uses cached storage only. The name of the Analysis Services POWERPIVOT instance is hard coded and cannot be changed
PowerPivot System Service (Mid Tier Service in Health Analyzer Rules)This service hosts the refresh scheduling engine, which calls Excel Services APIs for data refresh of Excel 2013 workbooks. For Excel 2010 workbooks, the service directly performs the data model processing but continues to reply on Excel Services for loading the data model and updating the workbook. This service provides methods for components such as the user interface pages, to communicate with the system service.Manages requests for external access to workbooks as a data source, received through the PowerPivot Web Service.Scheduled data refresh request management for timer jobs and configuration pages. The service manages requests to read data in and out of the service application database and trigger data refresh with Excel Services.Usage processing and related timer job.
The web application solution should only be deployed to the web applications in which you want to make the PowerPivot Gallery available
Processing power is used to scan the raw, un-aggregated data and build it into structured Analysis Services Data Tables. The more RAM you have, the more PowerPivot data that will be stored in memory and the more responsive PowerPivot will be to user interaction.PowerPivot uses L2 and L3 processor caching. The more the better.Resources:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fb86ca0a-518c-4c61-ae78-7680c57fae1f

You must be a local admin on the machine that you are installing Analysis ServicesAnalysis Services server must be joined to a domain. It doesn’t have to be the same domain that you are running SharePoint, but it must be in the same Active Directory forest. There can only be one PowerPivot instance per SQL server. The installation process actually has the instance name hard coded to “PowerPivot”Resources:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219067.aspx
