Aj rokeri chcú občas žúrovať! Lenže nie všetci fandia ošarpaným, zadymeným

pub, there’s no shortage of beer and quite an impressive whiskey selection.
TV screens showing sport matches are on around the clock, guitar rock plays
in the background and a cigar lounge caters to leather-clad tobacco aficio-
nados. Barrock, however, is far from being only a ‘gentlemen’s club’, as lady
rockers find this burger haven just as attractive as the guys do. Barrock ap-
peals to its fans all week long, but the fun intensifies on weekend nights,
when the whiskey gets flowing (and table top dancing naturally ensues).

Keď jeden z najlepších slovenských bubeníkov vezme do rúk klub, nemôže to
dopadnúť inak ako hudobne. Funk, rock, jazzrock a občas aj blues – v Music
Gallery u Dežmára pod vedením Martina Valihoru sa hráva často a nahlas,
pričom spolu s prvotriednymi lokálnymi hráčmi tu šancu dostávajú aj mladé
nevycválané kapely. Valihora zároveň využíva svoje bohaté hudobné kontak-
ty a občas pritiahne na pódium niekoho spoza hraníc našej republiky. Klub

When one of Slovakia’s best drummers decides to run a club, the outcome
can’t be anything but a musical gem offering funk, rock, jazz-rock and some-
times blues. Martin Valihora created an unpretentious concert venue, where
first-class musicians proudly dictate the sound and young talented bands
follow suit. Martin Valihora uses (quite effectively) his name and talent to
lure important players from near and far, for the hearing pleasure of the
discerning crowds. The club itself is spacious, with several separate rooms,
in addition to a charming outdoor garden. Don’t expect white tablecloths
or fancy silverware though; Dežmár is, first and foremost, a down-to-earth
watering hole for undemanding patrons. Great jazz or blues will be neatly
complemented with cold beer and some no-nonsense Slovak food (sausages
included). Just know you are dining with some of the best from the Slovak
music scene.

Novootvorený klub Kontakt priniesol trochu alternatívy do inak vyglančené-
ho centra mesta a medzi úhľadnými teraskami okolitých podnikov sa vyníma
ako biela vrana. Alebo skôr čierna ovca rodiny. Mladí a draví majitelia prišli
s nesmierne ambicióznym multikonceptom, ktorý nič neobišiel: hudba, pitie,
jedlo, umenie, prednášky, workshopy, party, filmy, pričom zaostrené je na
zábavu a oddych pre dospelých aj deti. Kontakt chce byť skutočným kultúr-
nym centrom a púta pozornosť aj lodným kontajnerom, ktorý si kontaktisti
drzo vyložili priamo pred dvere a predĺžili tak svoje priestory o improvizova-
né “detské ihrisko”. Cool a avantgardná mládež Kontakt okamžite poctila
svojou priazňou a cez víkendy sa tu tvrdo žúruje. Hudba všakovaká, najmä
elektronická – menovite mimo hlavný prúd.
The recently opened Kontakt club brought a taste of the alternative to the
city centre’s (mostly) polished elegance, and became a ‘white crow’ (or ‘black
sheep’ if you like) among the neatly decorated terraces of near-by places.
The young enthusiastic owners came up with an ambitious, artsy, cross-gen-
re concept: the club unites music, drinks, food, art, workshops, parties and
gallery exhibitions. Its focus is not only on fun for adults, but includes their
offspring as well. Kontakt, aspiring to become a true cultural hub in town,
both attracts and infuriates people with its boldly colored ship container,
cheekily placed in front of the club. Kontakt has turned it into a playground
where kids can run wild and free while their parents sip coffee or wine. For
some this venue is a little too hip, but the cool and avant-garde youths an-
nexed Kontakt right away, and they party hard over the weekends. Music
varies but electronic beats dominate and the leitmotiv of Kontakt probably
is ‘no mainstream please’.

4. TRAFO MUSIC BAR
Notoricky známa diskotéka Trafo music club sa nachádza v podzemí histo-
rického Erdődyho paláca z 18. storočia, s funkčnou trafo stanicou priamo
v interiéri klubu. Ceny drinkov sú nastavené vyššie ako bratislavský priemer,
no barmani sú v remesle celkom slušne podkutí, takže vám pravdepodobne
bude chutiť. V tomto podniku majú dámy spravidla vstup lacnejší ako páni,
a to dokonca viac ako o polovicu. Hudba je zameraná na komerčný house,
hip-hop a r’n’b, hrávajú pomerne známi lokálni DJi. Skalných fanúšikov Trafa
spoznáte podľa výdatného mejkapu (ženy), mohutných svalov (muži) a kom-
ba solárium plus mnohé plastické operácie (muži i ženy). Nenechajte sa však
odradiť, pretože Trafo sa skutočne vie zabávať a okolo polnoci už tempera-
mentné osadenstvo radostne a svorne poskakuje ako jedno telo, a zaruče-
ne tu neuvidíte žiadnu zamračenú tvár (čo ale samozrejme môže byť aj tým
botoxom).
Trafo music club is based in the historic underground premises of the 18th
century Erdody’s Palace. The famous local disco is well known for its pecu-
liar interior centrepiece; a working power transformer that gave the joint
its name. Prices are set a tad higher than in most Bratislava bars, but the
bartenders are skilled and their cocktails are worth the price tag. Ladies get
in for less than half the price of gentlemen’s entrance fee and (mostly) local
DJs play mainstream house, hip-hop or r’n’b. You’ll easily spot the regulars
of the club by generously applied make-up (women), bulky physiques (men)
and the timeless combo of fake tans and loads of cosmetic surgery (both
sexes). Don’t let this put you off though; Trafo really knows how to party and
around midnight, you just might find yourself singing along to some cheesy
tune with the rest of the ecstatic crowd.

Rio je diskotéka ako sa patrí: s kilami mejkapu, lodičkami a odhalenými hru-
ďami, chodí sa sem piť (v ponuke je 150 rôznych cocktailov), tancovať a sa-
mozrejme bezostyšne baliť príslušníkov opačného pohlavia. Krásnych žien
a zhovorčivých, zábavychtivých turistov je tu vždy dostatok. Klientela je tu
pekne medzinárodná, diskogule blýskavé, sukne nebezpečne krátke a taneč-
ný parket malý, no živý. Hudba patrí skôr k tanečnému mainstreamu, takže
sem pokojne môžete vziať aj konzervatívnejších kamarátov. Na svoje si prí-
du aj milovníci mohutných stejkov, keďže Rio má aj elegantný dining room
s (dosť vysoko nacenenou) argentínskou kuchyňou a dobrým vínom, takže
noc môžete začať poriadnou výživnou večerou. Reštaurácia má aj príjemnú
celoročnú terasu, využiteľnú v teplejších mesiacoch na vyvetranie po tanco-
vačke.
Rio is as disco as it gets– with tons of make-up, stilettos and men in deep V-
neck cuts, so no meticulously worked out chest muscle goes unnoticed. Rio
is a cocktail place; too, with a wide selection of over 150 concoctions. Stand-
ard dance music reigns here and people come first and foremost to flirt (and
more). There’s no shortage of cute girls or handsome men and tourists are
naturally fond of this club’s sexy vibe. International clientele, shiny disco balls,
dangerously short skirts and bright dance floor define this spot.
The music played is middle of the road; it won’t offend even 40-somethings
and does not require special dancing skills. Steak and meat lovers will love
Rio’s elegant but fairly pricey dining room upstairs, famed for Argentinian
cuisine and some really tasty wines. If you want to start the night with a nice
dinner, the restaurant offers a romantic terrace with a view of one of Bratis-
lava’s largest, most beautiful squares.

8. KC DUNAJ
Slovenskí hipsteri našli pre svoje vytočené fúzy a tričká s ironickými nápismi
útočisko v budove legendárneho obchodného domu z čias bývalého reži-
mu. Húfne sa tu zbiehajú nielen cez víkendy, ale aj cez týždeň, kedy sa v KC
Dunaj premietajú filmy, diskutujú hip témy a samozrejme čapuje (originálny
slovenský) cider. Víkendové večery patria koncertom a žúrom, ktoré žánrovo
siahajú od starých rokenrolov cez cutting edge elektroniku až po nesmier-
ne populárne Balkan či swing nights, počas ktorých sa klub mení na retro
tančiareň zo začiatku minulého storočia (čomu sa mimoriadne tešia najmä
hostia, ktorí sa radi príslušne nahodia). Piatky aj soboty sa po polnoci do
preplneného klubu tradične stojí šóra a dnu sa dostanete len výmenou za
niekoho, kto odchádza. Klientela býva zvyčajne veľmi mladá, medzinárodná
a priateľská a mohutne sa zgrupuje na slávnej terase s krásnym výhľadom
(a možnosťou fajčiť). Večer v Dunaji vás určite nezruinuje, ceny sú tu štu-

Slovak hipsters found a second home for their moustaches and cynical
t-shirts inside a legendary shopping mall from the bygone Communist era.
Weekends and sometimes even week nights attract the local (and interna-
tional) indie clientele, flocking to the cultural centre in herds. Expect an ec-
lectic choice of music, DJs, concerts, movie screenings, discussions and fes-
tivals, all accompanied with fairly tasty drinks (including cider). An evening
here won’t ruin you; prices can perfectly accommodate students’ wallets. Do
not expect sophisticated drinks mixology and be ready for very, very long
lines at the bar. Weekend evenings are dedicated to concerts and parties:
old rock and roll sounds, crooning from vinyl records, cutting edge electron-
ic beats, the incredibly popular Balkan music or swing nights that turn the
place into a cultured old school dancing venue from the early 19 hundreds,
with accordingly dressed visitors, as a cherry on top. Fridays and Saturdays
mean a lengthy wait at the gates. The crowd is usually young, cosmopolitan
and very friendly, nestling in small groups on the outdoor terrace that has
a stunning view (smoking permitted).

Ak sa chcete vyhnúť čoraz komerčnejšej atmosfére nočnej Bratislavy a stráviť

Nu Spirit Bar na Medenej 16 je priestor kde to všetko v roku 2001 začalo. Táto
bývalá pivnica s kapacitou 60 ľudí ponúka tú istú atmosféru ako jej mladší a väčší
brat Nu Spirit Club (pozri predošlú stranu), od ktorého sa nachádza dve minúty
pešo, ale v omnoho intímnejšom prostredí. Bar je otvorený sedem dní v týždni

The underground cave-like cellar for roughly 60 people, is the place where the
legendary Nu Spirit brand started back in 2001. It is located on Medená street,
a mere two-minute walk from its bigger and younger brother named the Nu
Spirit Club. Nu Spirit Bar (formerly known as Buddha Bar) offers a similar vibe
but in far more intimate surroundings. Opened seven days a week until the wee
small hours, it hosts top-notch local DJs playing various soulful genres. The bar
is a real sanctuary for people who are somewhat more discerning about their
music. Get ready for a taste of genuine Bratislava underground. Over the years,
the Nu Spirit venues have hosted Grammy-winning musicians such as Robert

11. ATELIÉR BABYLON
Čoraz populárnejší Ateliér Babylon v priestoroch dávno zrušeného kina spá-
ja uvoľnenosť hudobného klubu s eleganciou divadla a trochou prívetivého
oldschool šarmu. Oplatí sa ho navštíviť najmä v chladných mesiacoch, kedy
organizátori vyberú to najlepšie z domácej, no tiež zahraničnej hudobnej
scény. Pri komornejších koncertoch sa nesedí klasicky v radoch, ale okolo sto-
líkov, takže si môžete kultúrny zážitok vychutnávať spolu s drinkom zo staro-
bylého baru. Ponuka baru je skromná, no lacná. Nad hlavným auditóriom je
k dispozícii VIP balkón s kapacitou sto hláv, kde v prítmí pravidelne zahliad-
nete známe tváre miestneho muzikantského neba. Na väčších akciách sa sála

feels awkward in any kind of subculture. You know, ‘normal’ people want
to hang out and have some fun, too! BeAbout feels like a family-run busi-

chicken wings) that turns into a fun night club at night, with mainstream
dance parties and occasional concerts of lesser known local bands. BeAbout

Ak vám nadránom v najlepšom švungu zatvoria dvere pred nosom, nezúfaj-
te. Rockový bar Rock OK je najdlhšie otvorený klub v Bratislave. Zabávať sa tu
môžete až do šiestej hodiny rannej, teda za predpokladu, že rock je vaša šál-
ka čaju. Rock OK sa nehrá na nič, čím nie je: nechýbajú drevené stoly, tehlové

can party until 6AM – and if rock is your cup of tea, we promise you will love
it. There’s nothing pretentious or snobby in the pub with the longest open-

Tento klub nemôže byť zariadený inak ako v štýle britských rockových le-
giend. Ak máte nad posteľou plagáty Sabbath, Stones a Jethro Tull, hneď sa
tu budete cítiť ako doma. Rozľahlý klub má kapacitu až 400 miest, je otvo-
rený sedem dní v týždni a každý víkend tu na dvoch podlažiach a troch plat-

Relatívne mladý High Street Club vznikol vo viacúrovňových podzemných
priestoroch v centre mesta v blízkosti frekventovanej Obchodnej ulice. Je
to klasicky blýskavá diskotéka s dvoma barmi a bežnou ponukou tropické-
ho pitiva. Ak sa chystáte na dámsku jazdu, rande, či iba na obyčajný výjazd
s priateľmi, tento podnik môže byť dobrou voľbou, najmä ak sa chcete jedno-
ducho bezproblémovo zabaviť a nepotrpíte si na DJov svetového mena. In-
teriér High Street Clubu je atypicky terasovito členený a i s priestormi na
sedenie dostatočne rozľahlý. Samotné tanečné parkety má skôr menšie, čo
nahráva neviazanému túleniu sa k neznámym. Pravidelne tu bývajú ladies
nights, oldies party a občas nejaké to latino, pričom miestne barmanky aj

Ak sa na fungovaní klubu podpíšu kultúry z európskych metropol ako Lon-
dýn, Berlín či Paríž, vznikne z toho pozoruhodný počin. Ak vám uhladené,
nablýskané diskotéky lezú hore krkom, príďte do Bateliéru. Tu vznikol in-
teriér ako keby náhodou, strohé steny oživuje len trocha streetartovej es-
tetiky, chilluje sa na secondhandových gaučoch a pije sa z plastu. Klub má
multikultúrny hudobný záber: pravidelne tu hráva reggae a africké či balkán-
ske rytmy, folk, world music, občas aj nejaká tá temnejšia alternatíva či iné
okrajové žánre. Výber na bare nie je veľký, ponuke dominujú pivá a základné

Batelier is an offbeat cocktail of cultural influences with discernible imprints
of London, Berlin or Paris, all mixed in with some Slovak ingredients. This
fresh indie hang-out is a popular choice of those tired of ‘blingy’ cookie cut-
ter discos. Batelier is definitely low-brow, scruffy and shabby, with unpreten-
tious young crowd to boot. The interior incorporates rough street art aes-
thetics and there’s a chillout-zone with second hand sofas. Drinks are served
in plastic cups and are keenly-priced. No real genre confines for music are to
be found here: there are regular reggae parties, African or Balkan beats, folk
and world music, plus some really weird music acts from all over the world.
Batelier gladly embraces darker alternative scene as well. The menu at the
bar is super simple: basic drinks, spirits and beer. What else could you wish
for? Well, you can join the merry groups of smokers in the tiny park outside,
if that’s your thing. No judgements here.

bare-walled cubicle. Fuga proudly hosts the créme de la créme of local and

Budova Loftu slúžila kedysi na výrobné účely, čo prezradí jej drsný, industri-
álny feel. Majitelia však zapojili šikovné ruky dizajnérov a vytvorili miesto,
z ktorého sála bohémska aj undergroundová atmosféra zároveň. Pravidelne
tu vystupujú zaujímavé hviezdy svetovej scény, pričom Loft sa žánrovo príliš
neobmedzuje a servíruje akcie širokého záberu. A je úplne jedno, v čom prí-
dete, v Lofte vyzerá každý k svetu. Keď sa akcia vydarí, nájdete tu veselo po-
skakujúci dav, v skyboxe polihujú fešní, uvoľnení ľudia v kreslách a atmosféru
dopĺňajú zaujímavé dekorácie. Sú tu však aj isté pravidlá: obsluha operuje
výhradne na bare a fajčiť sa smie len vonku. Loft je aktívnejší v chladných
mesiacoch, v lete sa žúry presúvajú do sesterského outdoorového klubu
na brehu Dunaja (Pláž pod Ufom). Program radšej vždy skontrolujte vopred
– na menších akciách tu občas býva smutne prázdno.

in the current décor of the club. An architect’s expert touch helped create a
high-end concrete space with truly unique atmosphere. Loft operates mainly
in the cold months, after its outdoor twin ‘Pláž pod Ufom’ closes for the
season. This is a club where real music stars come to play. It hosts parties, live
concerts and film events, inviting all kinds of music genres from every corner
of the world and thus attracting concert fanatics in herds. Don’t worry about
dress code – you’ll feel as cool as it gets in this chic urban spot. Once inside,
join the happily jumping crowd on the floor or the urban socialites relaxing

Subclub je naozajstný underground. Patrí ku kultovým bratislavským klubom
a medzi DJmi a tanečnou bandou je známy aj za hranicami krajiny. Napríklad
aj preto, že je zabudovaný v hradnej skale, pôvodne slúžil ako protiatómový
kryt a tancovať sem chodili už mamy a tatkovia súčasného osadenstva. Aj keď
sa podnik celé roky oficiálne volá inak, mnohí jeho (zarytí) návštevníci mu
dodnes nepovedia inak ako Účko. Do útrob hradnej skaly sa ide neelegant-
ne, v štekloch vám to pôjde horšie, najmä ak je blatisto. A vôbec, keď ide-
te do Účka, štekle nechajte doma. Akcie sú prevažne tanečné (drum‘n‘bass,
dupstep, techno), občas sa vyskytne nejaký ten dancehall alebo reggae, plus
pravidelné indie nights. Ponuka baru je prostá a pre bežný ľud cenovo prí-
stupná, ak vás rozbolia nohy, môžete posedieť na lavici alebo si zahrať stolný
futbal. Obrovskú radosť robia clubberom aj ceny vstupného, ktoré niekedy
dokonca neprekročí symbolické euro.
Subclub is Bratislava’s cult underground spot, well known to DJs and club-
bers from both home and abroad. This former bomb shelter under the city
castle hosted legendary dance parties for the moms and dads of today’s
audience. Subclub is still referred to by some as Účko (its original name),
especially amongst the more “mature” fans of this club. Coming here, leave
high heels at home, please – you have to pass through a couple of long tun-
nels before entering the venue and taller clubbers might even need to bend
slightly. Subclub is all about electronic music: drum’n’bass, dubstep, techno,
occasionally there’s reggae or dancehall and there are some regular indie
nights. The bar menu is simple, prices friendly and if you tire of dancing,
you can play (or watch) table football. Entrance fees are more than student-

Otvorená len v teplejších mesiacoch, s dobrým jedlom, efektívnym personálom
a slušným soundsystémom – Pláž pod Ufom zaslúžene patrí medzi obľúbené
miesta na žúry pod holým nebom, hoci je absolútne vydaná všanc poveternost-
ným vplyvom a občas sa nejaká tá párty zruší tesne pred štartom. Tancovačky
tu bývajú krásne uvoľnené, s prázdninovou atmosférou tropického ostrova. Bar
s kuchyňou je otvorený aj cez deň a v lete v meste nájdete len málo príjemnej-
ších miest na posedenie pri drinku – môžete sa s pohárom zvaliť do plážového
lehátka a užívať si výhľad na mesto spolu s fantastickým osviežením od rieky.
Keď hrá DJ či živá kapela, pekní mladí ľudia sa tu radostne natriasajú v rytme la-
tina či hojdajú spolu s hiphopom až do rána. Ideálny prístup k Pláži: jednoducho
k nej prejdite peši cez Nový most.
This charming open air bar, operating during warmer months only, offers a
great view of Danube, plenty of sexy vibes, decent food, quick-footed staff and
most importantly, a very good sound-system. Pláž pod Ufom (“Beach under the
UFO”) on the river bank is a god-send for the local land bound summer lovers
and is well known for its great parties under a starry sky. The open air setting
(only part of the bar is covered) has its understandable cons: given its expo-
sure to the Mother Nature and her whims, Pláž sometimes has to cancel a party
shortly before the arranged start. The club has a tropical island feel and danc-
ing gets carefree and wild well before midnight. In the summer you’ll hardly
find a better place to hang out: sun beds, fresh salads and sizzling meats from
the grill, wicked cocktails and the majestic scenery on the other side of Danube
make for a great city holiday chill out spot. The music is well taken care of by a
large number of resident or visiting DJs and occasional live music performances,
with good looking young crowds dancing to Latino or hip-hop beats until early
morning hours. How to get to Pláž? It’s easy – cross the bridge (with the UFO on
it) from the Old Town toward Petržalka district. Taking a bus or a cab is not really
worth the hassle because it’s a really lovely walk.

Nenápadná budova v pešom dosahu od Hlavnej vlakovej stanice skrýva za

Klub žije najmä v chladnejších mesiacoch, pretože jeho priestory sa obme-
dzujú na vnútrajšok. Interiér je jednoduchý a funkčný, chodí sa sem najmä
na koncerty na stojáka (a tancováka). Personál je pomerne promptný, no
za pivo v plastovom pohári si priplatíte vratnú zálohu. Ak vo vás bdie duša
rockera a holdujete metalu, punkrocku, gitarovým rifom či bigbeatu, MMC
určite neobíďte; nezriedka tu hrávajú aj známe svetové kapely. Pozrite si však
na webe program, pretože MMC otvára brány len v čase akcií. V budove sídlia
aj ďalšie dva alternatívne kluby: rockový Randal a chill-out bar Hopkirk.
The inconspicuous building within walking distance from the central train
station is a sanctuary of hard-rock, punk and all sorts of metal, plus occasion-

fancy décor or even chairs for that matter; this place is designed for standing
only (or dancing only, if that’s more your thing). Staff is quick and efficient,

kvalitné punkové natriasanie, keďže do Randalu nezriedka zablúdia aj sve-
tové hviezdy drsnej hudby.
The name of this club (“Roar”) says it all: this is no place for fans of intimate
piano recitals. This rock-themed club (located at the crossroads of Sancova
and Zilinska Streets), is a paradise for genuine hard rock enthusiasts. The
sound system screams out loud punk, grind, metal, thrash metal, death met-
als plus other metals and the live concerts here are usually succeeded by
similarly sounding ‘discothèques’. In the summer you can enjoy the airy ter-
race out front, while grabbing something, reasonably priced, to eat. A small
downside: cigarettes are allowed in all areas and you’ll get home properly
‘smoked’, given the absence of proper air-conditioning. This tiny turn off is,
however, most definitely counterbalanced by the quality of music acts, often
international stars.

Hopkirk nie je iba nočný klub – okrem multižánrových akcií, workshopov či

mi ľuďmi? V Hopkirku máte k dispozícii skicáre s kresliarskymi potrebami.
Nájdete tu aj voľne dostupnú knižnicu či šach. Ležérnemu relaxu nahráva aj
výrazne pohodlné sedenie. Klub ponúka širokú škálu kvalitných čajov, absin-
tu a samozrejme piva. Bonus: Hopkirk je otvorený každý deň, pričom trikrát
do týždňa sa v ňom môžete v rámci akcie Chillout night hĺbkovo odreagovať
od každodennej reality. Hudba aj osadenstvo patria skôr k alternatíve, takže
sako a kravatu naozaj nechajte doma. A pozor – ak si potrpíte na extrémne
úslužný personál, zamierte radšej inam.
Hopkirk is more than just a party night club; it hosts a number of cross-genre
events, workshops, small concerts and regular exhibitions of young alterna-
tive artists. If you like to draw and are not shy to create in front of a crowd,
then Hopkirk provides you with the opportunity (sketch pads and tools to
express yourself, are available). You can also play chess or enjoy books from
the bookshelf, grab something to drink, kick back and relax in comfortable
sofas... Hopkirk is more something of an overgrown living room than just
a bar. The club stocks a variety of quality teas as well as beer and absinthe. It
is open daily, offering an escape from harsh outside reality and three times
a week there is a regular party aptly named “Chillout”.
This place is cozy and low key, so leave your tie and dress shoes at home.
A word of warning: if you insist on super attentive staff, go someplace else.

Názov tohto podniku je odvodený od slávnej nalievárne zo seriálu Simpso-
novci (Moe‘s – v slovenskom preklade U Očka). Táto alternatívna hudobná
piváreň má s tou animovanou spoločný nielen názov, ale aj oddanosť svojich
štamgastov. Interiér je zariadený v krčmovom ráze v mene prostej účelnosti,
po stranách však nechýbajú reflektory a bodové svetlá určené pre živé hra-
nie. Prelína sa tu hudobná produkcia pestrých žánrov: koncerty od mystic-
kých cez psychadelické až po tvrdý hardcore. A ak budete mať šťastie, zachy-
títe jednu z mnohých akcií na panáky, ktoré posúvajú ceny tvrdého alkoholu
nebezpečne nízko. Ak chcete skutočne zapadnúť medzi miestnu krčmovú
smotánku, toto je pre vás ideálny podnik.
The name of this unapologetically lowbrow place comes from the famous

this pub is a magnet for loyal beer worshippers. Interior is simple and just as
no-fuss as the crowd. Come enjoy a live concert as a good start to a down-

hardcore and offbeat folk. If you feel like getting a taste of a local beer sa-
loon with its authentic atmosphere, you are in the right place. Maybe you’ll
be lucky enough to find yourself here during their famous happy hour – that
sends the prices on shots dangerously low.

Hudobný podnik Hlava 22 je miestom, kde sa už mnoho rokov odohrávajú
kultivované koncerty jazzovej, rockovej, ale aj latino hudby. Klub pomenova-
ný po kultovom románe Josepha Hellera je cez týždeň otvorený do polnoci,
cez víkend sa otváracia doba predlžuje do tretej rána. Aj vďaka svojej polohe
(sídli predsa len trochu ďalej od centra) má ceny viac ako ľudské. Zvyčajne sa
tu netancuje, sedenie je skôr kaviarenské a plechové stolíky viac funkčné ako
elegantné. Steny zdobia staré hudobné inštrumenty a tak trochu bizarné
sochárske kúsky. Publikum tvoria skalní fanúšikovia hudby, ktorí oslavovali
osemnástku predsa len už trochu dávnejšie a nálada je tu bez výnimky uvoľ-
nená. Pravidelne si tu môžete na úrovni posedieť pri pohári vína a popočú-
vať nejakú tú miestnu či zahraničnú klubovú jazzovú hviezdu. Ak vás však
prepadne hlad, rašej si vybehnite do mesta: podnik nemá vlastnú kuchyňu,
len akúsi “družbu” s blízkou donáškovou pizzériou, s ktorou nie sú práve
najlepšie skúsenosti.
The music spot Hlava 22 (Catch-22) hosts sophisticated jazz, rock and Latino
concerts and it’s earned its reputation over many years. Yes, the name of
the club comes from Joseph Heller’s cult novel. This underground, spacious
bar located slightly outside the city centre stays open until midnight and
until 3AM during the weekends; and is usually very friendly towards your
wallet. Although there is enough room downstairs, Hlava 22 is no dancing
place. The clientele are grown-up and take their music seriously. You can sit
down at the simple café-style metal tables, appreciative head nodding and
clapping is strongly encouraged. The mood is always relaxed; you can have
a glass of wine while listening to a local or foreign jazz number, marvelling
at the walls and ceilings adorned with musical instruments and somewhat
bizarre sculptures. Should you get hungry, eat someplace else – Hlava has
a deal with a nearby pizza joint but they sometimes “forget” to deliver.

Bastion leží na uzle frekventovaných dopravných tepien mesta. Retro budo-
va z čias bývalého cez deň funguje ako tržnica. Viac pub ako klub obložený
masívnym drevom ponúka cez 300 miest na sedenie. Ak v Bratislave nie ste
prvýkrát a nie ste práve diskotékový typ, vezmite partiu kamošov do Bastio-
nu na rockový alebo folkový koncert. Zvuk tu síce nie je ktovieaký, no atmo-
sféra býva priateľská a domácka. Špecialitou pubu je najmä široký výber piva
vrátane belgických špeciálov a k tomu typicky krčmová, kaloricky veľkorysá
kuchyňa. Každý piatok a sobotu tu účinkujú miestne hudobné skupiny, čo
môže slúžiť ako istá protiváha mrakov smogu, ktorý sa na hostí sediacich na
terase valí od cesty.
Bastion is situated in walking distance from the city centre, in an old school
communist era building that houses a daytime farmers market. A laid-back
pub/concert venue, furnished in solid wood, it offers a staggering 300 seats
and is perfect for a jumpstart into a wild music night with a larger group of
friends. Bear in mind that this joint, with its focus firmly on folk and rock
music, has nothing for fans of the disco ball. The sound system is certainly
not top shelf, but the friendly atmosphere and local bands ardour will eas-
ily counter balance any minor setbacks. Bastion is a place to be for die hard
beer lovers – it’s simply a local watering hole where you will find some of the
Slovak and Czech finest drafts (plus Belgian specials) and can sample some,
unapologetically, calorie-heavy pub grub.

Najväčší latino klub na Slovensku je otvorený sedem dní v týždni, tancuje sa
denne okrem nedele. Víkendové párty plné vášnivej kubánskej salsy, mam-
by, bachaty, kizomby a ďalších exotických rytmov privádzajú do varu davy
latino-chtivých tanečníkov. Podnik logicky priťahuje medzinárodnú zmesku
hostí a ako to už býva, aj mnoho krásnych ohybných žien. Interiér klubu sa
od ostatných klasicky diskotékových líši unikátnym konceptom – priestory
sú zariadené v cestovateľskom duchu, vyzdobené originálnymi artefaktmi
z celého sveta. V La Fieste sa realizujú mnohé tanečné kurzy, nachádza sa
tu viacero tanečných sál (počas akcií k dipozícii až dva parkety) a kaviareň.
Rátajte s tým, že pravidelní hostia La Fiesty sú zanietení tanečníci, takže sa
podchvíľou môžete cítiť ako v profesionálnom tanečnom súbore. Ak vás teda
stiahne do tanca neznámy mladík či deva, príliš sa neokúňajte. Niečomu sa
aspoň priučíte.
Slovakia’s largest Latino club is open seven days a week and dancing happens
every day except Sundays. Weekend parties are hopping with vibrant Cuban
salsa, mambo, bachata and kizomba, that unleash a flood of exotic rhythms
on the Latino music buffs. The club offers numerous dancing classes (in sev-
eral, separate, rooms) and a café. La Fiesta is naturally a magnet for tourists,
not only due to great music, but also because of lots of local dance-craving
girls looking for agile partners. The interior is decorated with intriguing ar-
tefacts from around the world, making La Fiesta a truly unique disco hall.
Be warned though: La Fiesta’s regulars are passionate dancers and you can
easily find yourself feeling like you’ve joined a professional dance ensemble.
Should a stranger, man or woman, ask you to dance, then do not hesitate to
seize the opportunity and perhaps learn something new.

Alebo tiež mekka vysokoškolákov, pretože Elam je posledný pôvodný vyso-
koškolský klub na Slovensku založený ešte v roku 1982 skupinou študentov,
ktorí sa prisťahovali do internátového mestečka v Mlynskej doline. Aj dnes
celú prevádzku klubu zabezpečujú študenti. Klub sa snaží fungovať naozaj
kultúrne - premietajú sa tu filmy, stretávajú krúžky a je priestor aj pre začí-
najúce kapely. A cez víkendy sa intenzívne žúruje. Fičia parties od oldies po
elektroniku, v lete si môžete vychutnať nezameniteľnú chuť Kofoly na sviežej
terase. Klientelu tvoria, ako inak, študenti - miestni aj zahraniční, a samozrej-
me aj obligátni zrelší obdivovatelia (a.k.a. lovci) študentiek. Elam svoje ceny
prispôsobil študujúcej mládeži a s ISIC-om často zaplatíte nižšie vstupné.
Elam was founded in 1982 by campus students themselves and is the last one
standing out of all the former uni’ clubs in Slovakia. The place is still run by
students, who strive to maintain the cultural variety of the place – there are
movie nights, improv theatre, discussions and newbie bands are more than
welcome to perform. Weekends are dedicated to wild topical parties, and
the themes vary just like the musical genres – from oldies to rock to elec-
tronica. There’s a terrace open in the summer packed with students sipping
beers and the legendary soda Kofola (local “Coke”). Elam is of course full
of young people, Slovak and international, as well as some older aficiona-
dos of fresh-faced female beauty (a.k.a. ‘the lurkers’). Elam’s prices reflect
students’ means (and the already low price tags are subject to occasional
discounts and happy hours).

Kto žúruje bezstarostnejšie ako študenti? V Blave im na to slúži starší (a väčší)
UNIQUE klub, oáza elektroniky, ktorá počas tých najvychýrenejších akcií pras-
ká vo švíkoch. Hrávajú tu aj známe miestne kapely a mladé divadelné súbory,
pričom klub hostí parties aj počas týždna, kedy je v ostatných podnikoch
mesta už tradične mŕtvo. Barový pult má na dĺžku 30 metrov, čo zvyčajne
zaručuje promptnú obsluhu. Podnik stavil na obľúbený nápoj vysokoškolá-
kov – pivo, ktorého majú v ponuke pomerne široký sortiment (najmä české-
ho a slovenského). K ďalším bonusom patrí oddelená nefajčiarska miestnosť
a hromady krásnych, sviežich, cynizmom neskazených dievčat. Kapacita je
úctyhodných 600 osôb, a i keď sú ceny o čosi vyššie ako v susednom Elame,
vstupné býva skôr symbolické a nechýbajú pravidelné akcie na cocktaily.
Who parties harder than students? That is, of course, a rhetorical question.
Bratislava’s Unique Club (the bigger and classier brother of Elam club), is
known as an oasis of electronic music for youngsters and gets packed top to
bottom during its popular dance parties. Party time is daily except Sundays
and Unique stays open long after the rest of town’s clubs and pubs go to
sleep.
The bar counter is astonishing 30 meters long, securing a fast-track service
even during the busiest hours. The club wisely bets on the most popular
drinks for students’, so the menu lists loads of Slovak and Czech beer brands.
One of Unique’s major pluses is its separate room for non-smokers and let’s
not forget the tons of good looking, not-yet-cynical, students.
The club’s capacity reaches 600 people and despite slightly higher prices
compared with its nearby sibling Elam, your money will still go a long way.
