2. ANIMAL NUTRITION
The science of feed preparation and feeding
Feed processing is the application of physical,
chemical, biochemical, biological,
physiochemical and engineering methods to
increase the nutrient utilization of feeds and
fodders in animal system
3. Objectives of feed processing
โข To make the feed more palatable
โข Detoxify or remove undesirable ingredients
โข Increase nutrient content and nutrient
availability
โข Make animal production more economical
โข Make the storage easy and safe
4. Purpose or reasons
1. More profit- Feed efficiency can be routinely
improved as much as 10% and occasionally
by as much as 15-20% by changing the
method of grain processing
Mamum et al (2013) from his studies stated that
mixing of low cost low nutritive feed stuffs with
highly nutritive feed stuffs can increase the
margin of profit.
5. 2. To alter particle size-
Some feeds needs to be reduced in size to
increase their intake or digestibility- eg: Grinding
3. To change the density of feed-
Bulky feeds reduces feed intake. These are
sometimes prepared for the purpose of limiting
energy intake. These are preferred in feeding of
horse because they causes fewer digestive
problems.
6. 4. To change palatability-
Processing to increases the acceptance and feed intake Eg :
Molasses ,flavours ,fats
Decrease acceptance. Eg : salt
5. To increase nutrient content-
When used alone in their natural state, few feedstuffs meets
the natural requirement.
6.To increase nutrient availability-Starch and protein appears
to be less available in sorghum than in other grain, but new
processing techniques produced dramatic improvements in
the feeding value of sorghum.
7. 7. To change the moisture content-
Moisture content is changed to make it safer
Moreno et al (1986) from his studies stated that the
chances of aflatoxin growth is higher in feed with high
moisture level.
8.To improve Keeping quality- by drying or chemical
treatment (adding an organic acid). Eg ; Green fodder
9.To decrease harmful substances- Moulds, salmonella etc.
8. 10. To detoxify undesirable factors
Eg : considerable control of gossypol is possible
by heating
Heating of soyabean

i.e., how feed should be prepared and fed to animals to produce adequate and safe food and non-food materials such as wools and manures.
by changing the method of grain processing
In some case particle size is increase by pelleting or cubing to overcome dust problem, to prevent selectivity and to improve handling efficiency.
Very bulky feed is pelleted or cubed to increase energy density and feed consumption
This is attributed to gelatinization of the starch granules rendering them more digestible.
Pelleting increase utilization of phosphorous for chicken and pigs
When moisture increased there is increased digestibility and palatability
Sometimes feeds are subjected to certain process to ensure safety and avoid contamination and toxin production. Eg propionic acid and acetic acid inhibit mould
Gossypol in cotton seed
In soyabean there are enzymes that inhibit digestion.. Eg trypsin , chymotrypsin
