The Brain and Relationship Dependency
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says do everything you can to avoid
exposure; love says you are known and accepted
just as you are.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says you have no identity; love says your
identity is a child of God.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says you are destined to be abandoned; love
says, “Never will I leave you.”
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says you will be rejected; love says you are
accepted by God.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says you are worthless; love says you are
priceless.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says security can be lost in the blink of an
eye; love says security is found in God.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says if people leave, you are hopelessly
adrift; love says you have an anchor.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Fear says never lose control; love says God is in
control.
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Spiritual Attachment:
1. Am I worthy of being loved?
You are loved because God loves you. You no
longer need to be “worthy” in order to be loved.
This first fundamental question becomes
simply, Am I loved by God? And the answer is a
resounding yes!
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Spiritual Attachment:
2. Am I able to do what I need to do to get the
love I need? Since you are loved by God,
you already have the love you need. The
question becomes, Has God already done
everything needed to love me? And the
resounding answer is yes!
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Spiritual Attachment:
3. Are other people reliable and trustworthy?
From an earthly perspective, the answer is often
no. From a spiritual perspective, this question
becomes, Is God reliable and trustworthy? The
answer always and forever is yes!
Creating Spiritual Dependency
Spiritual Attachment:
4. Are people accessible and willing to respond to
me when I need them? From a spiritual
perspective, this becomes, Is God accessible and
willing to respond to me when I need him?
Again, the answer is yes!

Editor's Notes

  1. Emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior that involves words, action, or inaction (i.e., neglect) specifically designed to eat away at another person’s sense of self.
  2. Emotional abuse is the elevation of self—desires, wants, preferences, or opinions—through the demotion, belittlement, or dismissal of others.
  3. Emotional abuse robs a person of a healthy sense of self, creating a deficit in the ability to think positively about self—a deficit the person seeks to fill through relationships with others.
  4. Emotional abuse undercuts a person’s belief in their ability to accomplish tasks, goals, and dreams, creating a condition in which others are given the power to dictate those tasks, goals, and dreams.
  5. Emotional abuse removes a person’s sense of trust in their ability to care for self, necessitating a transfer of needs from that person to another person.
  6. Emotional abuse destroys a person’s belief that they are capable and worthy of love. Without a sense of worth or value, the person will exchange sexual behavior for attention and validation.
  7. Emotional abuse drains a person of the capacity to create and maintain healthy, uplifting relationships, resulting in personal isolation, despair, and loneliness, which feed the cycle of relationship dependency..
  8. Emotional abuse convinces a person that they are not capable and that discovery of those failings could happen at any time, leading to humiliation and rejection. To avoid surprise discovery, the emotionally abused person will sometimes create failure, including self-sabotaging relationships, in an attempt to orchestrate and control the discovery.
  9. Emotional abuse sets an impossible standard for love and acceptance, a bar the person attempts to reach time and time again, with inevitable failure acting to reinforce the person’s sense of unworthiness and need to achieve perfection to gain approval. Perfectionism undercuts the conditions necessary for a healthy relationship
  10. Emotional abuse heaps the weight of another’s disappointment, anger, and rage onto the back of an innocent person. Over time, this guilt becomes an accustomed weight, and the person fails to recognize the drag this weight causes in relationships.
  11. Emotional abuse heaps the weight of another’s disappointment, anger, and rage onto the back of an innocent person. Over time, this guilt becomes an accustomed weight, and the person fails to recognize the drag this weight causes in relationships.
  12. Emotional abuse is unfair. For most people who are attacked through emotional abuse, a part of them recognizes the unfairness of the treatment, resulting in anger and resentment. However, because of the persistent pattern of abuse, the person does not have an opportunity to express the anger or resentment, so they remain bottled up and unresolved, festering and poisoning self and other relationships.
  13. Emotional abuse resets normal with unhealthy and dysfunctional parameters. When seeking a “normal” relationship, an emotionally abused person ends up looking in all the wrong places.
  14. A healthy sense of self is integral to all relationships. When it is absent, a relationship suffers.
  15. Emotional abuse sets up a swirling vortex of emotions and actions with the power to grab and negatively affect future relationships.
  16. Intimacy requires trust, belief, and respect, all of which are systematically damaged or destroyed by emotional abuse. Without this positive foundation, healthy intimacy is at a severe disadvantage.
  17. When the context for relationships is emotional abuse, relationships themselves become suspect and risky..
  18. Perfectionism is not toxic to just one person in a relationship. The toxicity from perfectionism pollutes all parties in the relationship. The emotionally abused person feels they must be perfect to be loved but also resent having such a tremendous burden placed on them.
  19. A person living daily with another person can, nonetheless, be abandoned. When the other person is an emotional abuser, that person has abandoned their responsibility to cherish, accept, nurture, protect, and guide the other person. Constantly seeking after what is never provided creates a vicious cycle of hope dashed and disappointment.
  20. Emotional abuse heightens a person’s negative emotions. Fear, guilt, and anger are constantly on the surface, ready to be triggered by the slightest touch, intentional or unintentional. An emotionally unstable person contributes to an emotionally unstable relationship.
  21. Emotional abuse rubs a person’s emotional skin raw, creating a situation of hypersensitivity and putting undue pressure on relationships.
  22. People who are emotionally abused experience tension and confusion across the spectrum of relationships, not only in family relationships. Any relationship that might speak into the value or worth of the person is negatively affected by fear, anger, and doubt. Friendships, work relationships, and associations all become complicated because of the effects of emotional abuse.
  23. People respond to emotional abuse in a variety of ways, including both rejecting authority of any kind and desiring to substitute one controlling figure for another. In addition, the person may choose to become their own surrogate authority figure, meting out learned harsh judgment to self and others as a way to re-create “normalcy.” Relationships require mutual understanding and acceptance, which cannot be given in these situations.
  24. Emotional abuse sets up a pattern of behavior that can overtake and inundate successive generations, especially when that abuse remains unchallenged.
  25. This was one entry in a very long list that, over the years, we have both come to realize is significant and under-recognized.
  26. Emotional abuse dangles the carrot of acceptance constantly out of reach, propelling the person to greater and greater effort to gain approval. This pattern of people pleasing leads to an unhealthy desire to be perceived as needed and necessary by others, making the person a target for those who would take advantage.
  27. Emotional abuse creates an atmosphere of suspicion, distrust, and anxiety in relationships that can cause a person to conclude after successive relationship failures that a lack of relationships is the only safe alternative. Yet without a sense of self, the person continues to be drawn into relationships that create such fear.
  28. Emotional abuse produces a cavalcade of negative emotions, promoting a variety of self-soothing and self-numbing activities that can become addictive on their own and can exist in competition with relationships.
  29. There comes a point when a person is so beaten down emotionally that they lose the will to fight for self and capitulate to the control of others.
  30. Spiritual abuse happens when lies are told as if those lies are the truth of God. Spiritual abuse is used as a way to manipulate and control.
  31. When God, the Bible, and/or faith is used to weaken or destroy a person’s sense of self, spiritual abuse is present. The motivation behind the use of religion in this situation is not spiritual enlightenment but spiritual enslavement.
  32. Spiritual abuse happens any time a person usurps the power and authority of God to harm another person or to promote self at the expense of another
  33. Patterns of co-dependency/enmeshment are being played out through the drug-of-choice – relationships –this has turned into an addictive behavior.
  34. Relationship dependency and other addictive cycles have similarities because the brain chemistry involved in each is similar. Someone who is chemically addicted uses an outside substance to alter brain chemistry. A dependent person alters their brain through the associations of pleasure and distress within relationships.
