2. Period of Revelation of Surah Luqman
• Surah Loqman was revealed in Makkah during the period when persecution
to suppress the Islamic Dawah had begun
• All sort of coercion was employed to discourage people in accepting Islam
• Surah Al-Ankabut, was revealed in the same period. A study of the style and
subject matter of the two Surahs on the whole, however, shows that Surah
Luqman was revealed earlier, since there is no sign of the antagonism in its
background.
• While studying Surah Al-Ankabut one can clearly feel that the Muslims were
being severely persecuted during the period of its revelation.
3. Theme and Subject matter
• In this Surah the people are told about the absurdity of shirk and the
truth and reasonability of Tauhid, and
• They are invited to give up blind imitation of their forefathers,
• Deliberate with a cool mind upon the teachings of the Prophet
Muhammad (SAW)
• They are invited to open eyes to the manifest Signs of Allah found in
the universe around them and in their own selves, which bear evidence
to its truth
• Luqman the wise (whose wisdom was well known) preached exactly
same creed and the morals taught by Islam.
4. Who was Luqman
• Luqman was well known as a wise and learned man in Arabia.
• He has been mentioned in the poetry of the pre-Islamic poets like Imra'ul-
Qais, Labid, A'asha, Tarafa and others.
• Some educated Arabs also possessed a collection of the wise sayings of
Luqman.
• Suwaid bin Samir when heard Prophet (SAW) in Makkah, he submitted, "I
have a thing similar to what you preach," When asked what it was, he said,
"The roll of Luqman." Then on the Holy Prophet's instance, he read out a
portion of it, whereupon the Holy Prophet said, "This discourse is fine, but
that which I have is better still.' Then he recited the Qur'an to him, and
Suwaid admitted that that was certainly better than the wisdom of Luqman.
(Ibn Hisham, vol. II, p. 3781.
5. Luqman was a respected wise black Egyptian and
a Nubian & was called Hakeem(The Wise)
• Ibn 'Abbas says Luqman was a black slave, and the same is
the opinion of Abu Hurairah(RA), Mujahid, 'Ikrimah and
Khalid ar-Rabi.
• According to Jabir bin'Abdullah Ansari, he belonged to
Nubia.
• S'id bin al-Musayyib says that Luqman was an Egyptian
black person.
• Nubah is the country south of Egypt and north of Sudan.
• Therefore, calling the same person an Egyptian and a Nubian
and a Habashi, is one and the same thing
6. Imam Ibn Kathir's (RA) opinion
• According to Ibn Kathir and most Islamic scholars Luqman was not a prophet
but a wise man that God had blessed with wisdom.
• The earlier scholars, according to Ibn Kathir, were of the opinion that wisdom
means discretion and religious understanding.
• Luqman himself said that he maintained his honorable and noble qualities
by, "Lowering my gaze, watching my tongue, eating what is lawful, keeping
my chastity, undertaking my promises, fulfilling my commitments, being
hospitable to guests, respecting my neighbors, and discarding what does not
concern me. All these made me the one you are looking at."
7. LUQMAN(AS) WAS HONORED IN
QURAN

• And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful
to Allah ." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of]
himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of
need and Praiseworthy.
8. THE NATURE OF SHUKR
• 1- Accepting that all benefits come from the real
benefactor, Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala
• 2-The effect of the Shukr is to be happy with
whatever the Benefactor grants us
• 3-Be ever ready to render obedience to Allah
Subhanahu Wa Taala.
9. WHY LUQMAN(AS) WAS HONORED IN
QURAN
• He was granted wisdom from Allah and he was thankful for Allah’s blessings.
• He cared about his son and gave him “heart-penetrating advice” (mau’idha
in the Quranic vocabulary)
• The advice he gives to his son is timeless advice for all of humanity for all
time.
• It is more of a lesson for young men and women who are just going out into
the world. Allah starts the Surah by saying,
ِيمِكَحْال ِباَتِكْال ُاتَيآ َكْلِت-َينِنِسْحُمْلِل ًةَمْحَرَو ىًدُه
These are the verses of the wise Scripture, [with] guidance and mercy for those who do good. [Quran, 31:2-3]

aware. [Quran 31:16]

• And soon after mentions problems that many duat (those who do Dawah) face
today.
• He talks about the purification of the character now.
• He asks his son— and by extension Allah is giving this message to us— that
we do not become arrogant.

the people who we live around. This may make us arrogant and self-righteous.

only about how we deal with others, but also about how we
behave.

this is not how a believer should live.
• A believer is always humble.

َكِيْشَم يِف ْد ِصْقا َو

arrogant or boastful fashion.
• He does not ask his son to be passive, but rather to have the

• Finally, Luqman mentions that he should never
raise his voice.
• At times in our zeal to propagate Islam, we might

alienates people.

remembering and implementing these advices
• This is because the parents are entrusted with the care and guidance of their
children,
• Parents will be asked about their children’s behavior on the Day of Judgment.
40. Conclusion
• We should ponder over these verses that gather issues of belief, worship,
manners and enjoining the good and forbidding the evil.
• Luqman is mentioned as ‘the wise’ because Allah bore witness that He has given
him wisdom and due to that he must be thankful to Allah.
• Wisdom is to put something in its place. This was the wisdom of Luqmān and
every caller who is wise: he puts everything in its right context.
• Then wisdom is to walk the path of the Prophets (Alaihis Salaam) in calling the
people to Allah and in educating them about Islam.
