1. Reviewers: At this point we are just selecting candidates for interviews. We do not
have a lot on information, and a suggested scoring criteria sheet is attached below
to provide some guidelines. Please rank the applicants in your primary group, say
1-16. We likely will select the top 5-7 candidates in each group for interviews, but
we will discuss the final list to ensure that we hear from those most qualified. If
you think you have a COI, please let us know. Also, if you know an applicant not in
your group that you think would be a strong candidate, please share that
information as well. When your group is done, please submit your complete
rankings to Jay and David. Looks like a great group this year, so this should be very
engaging and a great deal of fun. Enjoy!

Questions to Ask during interview:
Do you feel capable of helping your students accomplish the feats (Fulbright
grant). Mine went above and beyond and one guy in my class pursued research
with one of my grad fellows and another decided to take another one of their
classes?
ORDER isn’t like other first-year seminars bc the students are experiencing all
these different teachers who are close and age and are straddling the line
between elder and peer? How will you deal with a situation when a first-year
starts treating you more like a friend than a teacher? How will you reclaim those
boundaries?
One of the most interesting parts of the class for first-years is hearing stories of
bumps in the road with research mentors and peers and how you got over it? In a
few sentences, please provide an entertaining anecdote about a hard time you’ve
had in research?
How would you handle a situation in which a student is offended by your research
topic or methods and has strong reservations about participating in class
discussion, fieldtrips, etc.?

Candidate Name: Alexander, Isabella
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__4__1. Research accomplishment.
__3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__4__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__3__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
This applicant’s research has the potential to pair well with the “Creating Emory” framework of first-year
students that focuses on racial and ethnic issues. Also, given that multi-cultural integration is a novel
experience for many first-year students, the topic could be very complimentary to their education as
citizen’s of a multi-faceted American and world landscape.
When Dr. Freeman mentioned Ms.Alexander’s approach to handling plagiarism, I felt her expertise in this
area might be helpful to Senior’s.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Anderson,Ellen
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
3. __3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__2__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__2__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Ms. Anderson appears to be very invested in her topic. Unfortunately, I feel she will expect an in-depth
analysis of a subject many first-year will not only be uninterested in, but also have a hard time
understanding the importance of. Also, I’m wary that her dissertation advisorexplained the merits of her
proposalbetter than she did.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Barnes, Dawn
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__4__1. Research accomplishment.
__5__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__5__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__5__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
I want to join her class today. Students discussing herclass who didn’t take her course is one of the highest
praises a teacher/professorcan receive from first-year students.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Burkett, James
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
__5__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__4__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__4__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
4. Additional comments:
Although Mr. Burkett is less accomplished than some of the other applicants, his interdisciplinary
considerations this early in the process seemlike they would compliment the program and his fellow
graduates well.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Byun, Phil
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
__2__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__2__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it

does not seem to have a clear direction for his module.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Calcutt, Sarah
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__4__1. Research accomplishment.
__3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__4__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__5__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Considering Ms.Calcutt is currently involved in two research projects, I feel she may be an excellent
candidate because of the duality of her experiences, but may be in over her head. Also, I feel that she could
really gain from working with the othergrad students because herintended teaching methods, although
good, could use critique. For example, the emphasized ideas for senior students could be highly valuable to
freshman and should be integrated into the first-year students’curriculum.
Suggestedscoring criteria

Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
5. __4__1. Research accomplishment.
__3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.

capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__5__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Ms. Chau’s proposalwas very clearly outlined and appears to be ready for immediate use.Ms. Chau, and
her proposal, appears to be very science focused and may not integrate well with humanities fellows. Also,
she does not clearly distinguish the differences in her plans for freshmen vs. seniors.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Cho, Kyuwon
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
__2__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.

From Mr. Cho’s application, I am left unsure what exactly he will be teaching. However, I do find some
merit in that he recognizes the importance of voice projection, illustration, etc.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Comstra, Heather
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__4__1. Research accomplishment.
__3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__4__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?

Ms. Comstra’s experiences (e.g. BCMB Training Grant Recipient) will provide valuable information on
navigating undergraduate and graduate studies for both freshmen and seniors.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Du, Xin

capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__5__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Mr. Din received a 5 for research accomplishment because I believe it will be very interesting to most
undergraduate students that he holds a patent. Additionally, his research experience is vast, yet remains in
his field.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Ehteshami, Maryam
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__4__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
My only concern with her proposalis the rigidity of her lecture series. One of the best aspects ofthe
ORDER course is the interdisciplinary portions and Mr./Mrs. Ehteshami’s module may not be able to mesh
well with others. On a separate note, being an “invited speaker”, I believe she will have helpful insights to
seniors and freshmen on how to make a good impression on speakers at academic conferences.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Fleischer, Candace
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
7. __3__1. Research accomplishment.

capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__4__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Ms. Fleischer appears ready to step into the classroom. However, her module schedule appears rigid and
possibly incapable of molding to the other grad students modules. On another note,Ms. Fleischer’s
research into some of the causes of depression and fatigue may be very complimentary to the required
Health 101 course for freshmen.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Forrest, Osric
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
Mr./Mrs. Forrest’s research may compliment the mandatory Health 101 course for all first-year students
because of its focus on inflammation. My only concern is the direction of the seniorresearch presentation;
it may need refining, however I believe this may be positive because of its flexibility.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Gander, Jennifer
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__4__1. Research accomplishment.
__3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__4__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
8. __4__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Ms. Gander’s research subject, public health, may provide a very interesting perspective to everyday
problems for both freshmen and seniors because it is world citizen-focused as opposed to a more specified
topic.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Ghai, Shweta
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
__3__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.

capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__4__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
I think it is very good that Mr./Mrs. Ghai mentioned an interest in providing opportunities for research to
their students,as this will allow freshmen a venue for expressing interests outside of their intended major
and seniors one last chance to step out of their boundaries before leaving the College.
Suggestedscoring criteria
Candidate Name: Hanes, Melinda
Using a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best score.
__3__1. Research accomplishment.
__5__2. Creative use of teaching venues and learning experiences.
__4__3. Opportunities for a freshmen/senior seminar. Did the presentation capture your interest? Would it
capture the interests of a 1st year student transitioning to college? ..a senior student capstone experience?
__4__4. Overall effectiveness and clarity of the presentation.
Additional comments:
Ms. Hanes’ intended use of cartoons will assist inkeeping the attention of her students and may be a good
consideration to share with fellow grad teachers.
