1. So and Mi Patterns
C, F, G major – 4/4 time signature – quarter notes only
• Note: Print two copies – one blank, one with “So” and “Mi” written on each note - laminate
• Preparation: Review “time signature” – review the rhythm “ta-ta-ta-ta” – review “double bar line” –
review “measure” – review “staff” – also select a student to hold the cards (so you can play piano –
or you can try to do both) – decide which key the students will sing in today and use the
corresponding cards (F, G, or C majors)
• Level 1 (blank): Students sing the patterns on “high” and “low” while touching shoulders for “high”
and tummy for “low” (teacher accompanies on piano)
• Level 2 (written on): Students sing the patterns on “so” and “mi” while touching shoulders for “so”
and tummy for “mi” (teacher accompanies on piano)
• Level 3 (blank): Students sing the patterns on “so” and “mi” while touching shoulders for “so” and
tummy for “mi” (teacher accompanies on piano)
• Level 4 (written on): Students sing the patterns on “so” and “mi” while using Curwen handsigns
(teacher accompanies on piano)
• Level 5 (blank): Students sing the patterns on “so” and “mi” while using Curwen handsigns (teacher
accompanies on piano)
• Level 6 (blank): Students sing the patterns on “so” and “mi” while using Curwen handsigns (teacher
records this performance for later discussion)
• Extensions:
– Have the students sing the patterns in all keys on the same day.
– Have the students sing two, three, and four patterns in a row.
– Have the students sing one pattern while you sing another
– Have one group of students sing one pattern while another group sings a different pattern.
