This document provides information on 14 art pieces created by Emily Steward, including the medium, size, and context for each work. Several pieces were painted during painting lessons at a cultural center, including the oil paintings "Calling", "Leading", and portions of "Stallion Battle". "Stallion Battle" is one of the artist's favorite pieces due to her love of horses and how the colors and energy of the fighting stallions turned out. Other works included class projects in oil painting, charcoal, and scratchboard illustration.
2. Calling
3’ by 4’, Oil
Painting –
Calling took
me several
months to
complete
while I was
taking
painting
lessons at a
cultural
center.
3. Leading
2’ by 4’, Oil
Painting –
Leading
also was
painted
while at the
cultural
center, but
I finished
most of the
painting at
home. This
piece was
painted as
a gift.
4. Stallion Battle
2’ by 3’, Oil
Painting –
About half of
Stallion Battle
was painted
at the cultural
center and the
other half at
home. My
smallest paint
brush had the
most brush
strokes on
these horses.
Stallion Battle is
perhaps one of
my favorite
pieces. Mostly
because I love
horses, but I also
like how the piece
turned out, the
colors, and the
energy created
by the horses. The
brown stallion
was the easiest
because its skin
did not have all
the reflections
that the white
one had.
7. Battling Firebird and Dragon
3’ by 4’
Oil Painting
Class Project.
I looked at
pictures of
different
types of fire
pictures and
combined
them with
my
imagination.
8. Detail Study
2’ by 3’ Oil Painting
Class project where
we took a detailed
picture and painted
what we saw. The
idea would be that it
would be a such
microscopic view of a
realistic picture that
it would look
abstract.
9. Dolly Madison
Scratchboard –
Was an
Illustration
project of a
historical scene.
This is Dolly
Madison
rescuing George
Washington’s
portrait. This
piece was the
first time I ever
worked with
scratchboard
and was a bit of
an experiment.
10. At Midnight
Charcoal –
At Midnight was
a class project for
Illustration class.
I wished to
capture a sense of
mystery in the
people and the
destination,
hinting at
Charon , the Styx
ferryman, and
the Grim Reaper
for the standing
figure, and a
Viking gondola
for the boat.
11. Assassin
Charcoal –
Assassin was
a class
project on
creating a
character.
To create a
portrait of this
character I wanted
to suggest mystery
and deadliness.
12. At the Pass
Charcoal – At
the Pass is a
continuation of
the last project
but set in a
storyboard.
This scene
demonstrates the
Assassin’s
deadliness.
13. You should have run
Charcoal,
Storyboard 2 –
This one shows
the same cold
calculating
assassin being
gentle and
protective
toward the
child whose life
he just saved.
14. China Wall
2’ by 3’ Oil Painting
Class project
Taken from picture
of the Great Wall
in China.
