Local Motors: Co-Creation in Car Design and Production Local Motors is a new car manufacturer with a completely co-creative business model:  Co-creation of vehicle concept and design, including subcomponents and the car model  Co-creation production, down to the buyer’s participation  in vehicle assembly Open sourcing of existing automotive parts Local Motors illustrates all aspects of enterprise co-creation – co-creation of value, new experiences and interactions, engagement platforms, and networks/communities

The Local Motors Experience Has Many Facets What is the "Local Motors Experience"? Participating in the design process, collaborating to create a no-compromise vehicle you love, then participating as the design you love transcends from sketch to road-ready production vehicle. Even after your car is built, purchased, and driven home the Local Motors experience continues. The auto-servicing aspect of Local Motors will be a pleasure and will set a new standard for customer service. The Local Motors Experience is about design inspired by you, about collaboration, and definitely about a gratifying personal experience Car enthusiasts and design lovers are invited to participate in every aspect of Local Motors. From voting on original car body designs, to generating feedback for a designer you admire you can sculpt the Local Motors brand. Monthly Regional and Topical Design Competitions How is Local Motors different from other portfolio hosting sites, or other car design competitions? We are building a community that puts the designer on a pedestal. This is not a black box, where you send stuff to us and a discrete panel of judges tells you if it is good. This is an interactive community where comments and suggestions and voting are happening on real time; Based on interviewing many designers, we know this is something that is really exciting and has not been done before We run a competition every month, and pay out every month. Inside the Co-Creation Process Interview with Local Motors’ founder Jay Rogers: The tough part was getting a community of designers and his team of engineers to agree on anything. [Rogers says,] “You have to get them to talk. The designers want one thing, the engineers will tell you no, and often you have to get the two to reach a compromise. Winning Designs How are winners chosen from the Local Motors Sketch Competitions? Local Motors will choose the winner of each competition. Community enthusiasm and voting for each design is the most important factor taken into account. We will be looking for designs that specifically satisfy the needs of people in each specified area. Greatness, in our estimation, comes from how purely the design expresses the objectives of the vehicle aesthetically and functionally. The Rally Fighter – the First Co-Created Model in Production From car blog Jalopnik.com, Nov. 6, 2009: This is Local Motors' Rally Fighter, the first car openly developed and built using crowd-sourcing. It will change the auto industry forever. More importantly for me, with its P-51 fighter plane-influenced design, it might be the coolest-looking car ever. The Rally Fighter is the first-ever crowd-sourced "creative commons"-like car, is the culmination of 35,000 designs by 2,900 community members from over 100 countries. Local Motors, the company behind it, plans to change forever the way cars are designed For starters, Local Motors doesn't even have a designer for their cars on staff. Each major system of the vehicle — whether it's the exterior design, interior design or doors — heck, even the name — are developed in an open source development process. Once there's enough support for any single design, Local Motors will develop it openly. That means members of the Local Motors community not only choose which designs are developed, but also, they get to help develop them. Contests are held for the development and the winner receives a monetary prize based on the importance of the system to developing the overall vehicle. Rally Fighter Buyers Help Build Buyers are required to help build their vehicles at Local Motors’ mini-factory in Phoenix Rally fighter production started in June 2010 As of Nov. 2010, 127 models had been reserved for purchase, and 4 had been produced, at a cost of $50,000+ each

Local Motors Hosted a Defense Dept. Design Contest DARPA ran a contest for a military transport vehicle through Local Motors in Feb.-March 2011 Local Motors is working in conjunction with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to create a new process for the development of future military vehicles. The first step in this new process is to test the co-creation of a Militarily Relevant vehicle through a unique Experimental Crowd-derived Combat-support Vehicle (XC2V) Design Challenge. The winning design from this challenge will be rapidly developed and transformed into an operational prototype that will be shown around the United States as a proof of concept. The XC2V Concept Car Was Designed and Produced in Just 3½ Months The winning vehicle, from a crowd-sourced design, was presented to President Obama in June 2011  [CEO Jay] Rogers’ team of designers and engineers at Local Motors in Phoenix built the car, nicknamed FLYPmode, from scratch in less than four months, unveiling it for President Obama last week before delivering it to the military’s mad-science division in Virginia. If makers like Rogers get their way, the first Experimental Crowd-derived Combat Support Vehicle, or XC2V, just might be the future of the military industrial supply chain. … The goal was to quickly design and build a fully deployable vehicle, and Local Motors beat DARPA’s deadline, Rogers said. It’s the sort of task that would be next to impossible in a traditional military procurement process. The Evolution of Local Motors: Local Forge In June 2011, Local Motors CEO Jay Rogers announced that Local Motors would launch Local Forge, an extension of its platform to parts for cars and other vehicles Parts are much more scalable than full automobiles Local Motors works closely with SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Marketing Assn. Community enthusiasm and voting for each design is the most important factor taken into account. We will be looking for designs that specifically satisfy the needs of people in each specified area. Greatness, in our estimation, comes from how purely the design expresses the objectives of the vehicle aesthetically and functionally.   • 17. Rally Fighter Buyers Help Build Buyers are required to help build their vehicles at Local Motors’ mini-factory in Phoenix Rally fighter production started in June 2010 As of Nov. 2010, 127 models had been reserved for purchase, and 4 had been produced, at a cost of $50,000+ each

  • 19. Local Motors Hosted a Defense Dept. Design Contest DARPA ran a contest for a military transport vehicle through Local Motors in Feb.-March 2011 Local Motors is working in conjunction with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to create a new process for the development of future military vehicles. The first step in this new process is to test the co-creation of a Militarily Relevant vehicle through a unique Experimental Crowd-derived Combat-support Vehicle (XC2V) Design Challenge. The winning design from this challenge will be rapidly developed and transformed into an operational prototype that will be shown around the United States as a proof of concept. The XC2V Concept Car Was Designed and Produced in Just 3½ Months The winning vehicle, from a crowd-sourced design, was presented to President Obama in June 2011 [CEO Jay] Rogers’ team of designers and engineers at Local Motors in Phoenix built the car, nicknamed FLYPmode, from scratch in less than four months, unveiling it for President Obama last week before delivering it to the military’s mad-science division in Virginia. If makers like Rogers get their way, the first Experimental Crowd-derived Combat Support Vehicle, or XC2V, just might be the future of the military industrial supply chain. … The goal was to quickly design and build a fully deployable vehicle, and Local Motors beat DARPA’s deadline, Rogers said. It’s the sort of task that would be next to impossible in a traditional military procurement process.
