Developing standards and interoperability
Support new technologies, encouraging standards and interoperability. Currently standards are defined by industry interest parties, often outside Europe, and this undermines long-term competitiveness. A European push is needed to define standards in areas such as the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, big data and cloud computing
Europeana DSI in the DSM
In our case, we deliver services for Europe’s cultural sector to enable interoperability of Europe’s digitized culture. The vision is to make culture openly accessible in a digital way and to promote the exchange of ideas and information.

The resolution also insisted, inter alia, on:
the need to improve the level of digitisation, preservation and online availability of cultural heritage, in particular the European film heritage;
Cultural heritage not a community policy, tools available at EU level complement national and regional programmes
For reference:
Wikipedia: "A smart city (also smarter city) uses digital technologies or information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance quality and performance of urban services, to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens."
(Digital technologies through apps such as Google Field Trip or walking tours that via geo-localisation bring you prime content, including vintage photographs, to your portable devices… And of course promotion of AR and VR applications)
The Smart Cities Council's [a for-profit, Partner-led association for the advancement of the smart city business sector] vision for smart cities is (http://smartcitiescouncil.com/):
We envision a world where digital technology and intelligent design have been harnessed to create smart, sustainable cities with high-quality living and high-quality jobs. We promote cities that embody our three core values:
Livability: Cities that provide clean, healthy living conditions without pollution and congestion. With a digital infrastructure that makes city services instantly and conveniently available anytime, anywhere.
Workability: Cities that provide the enabling infrastructure -- energy, connectivity, computing, essential services -- to compete globally for high-quality jobs.
Sustainability: Cities that provide services without stealing from future generations.
Very specific type of public information, drivers are not economic, but culture and social / educational (access to knowledge, better education, …).
Market / ecosystem led by non-commercial endeavours with huge success (eg Wikimedia Commons, Flickr Commons), leaving very little room for commercial operations
Tourism a real, indirect driver
