• 1958: The 1. use of BI by IBM Researcher Hans Peter Luhn in "A
Business Intelligence System" [2]
• 1989: Gartner Research - Howard Dresner - "father of BI" - first
coined the term as "a broad category of software and solutions for
gathering, consolidating, analysing and providing access to data in a
way that lets enterprise users make better business decisions" [3]
• 1993: MicroStrategy 1. BI SW Product: EIS Toolkit [4]

Explanation of BI
Definition: "Business intelligence is the process of gathering high-
quality and meaningful information about the subject matter being
researched that will help the individual(s) analyzing the
information, draws conclusions or make assumptions.”
"Ideal BI system gives an organization's employees, partners, and
supplier's easy access to the information they need to effectively do
their jobs, and the ability to analyze and easily share this information
with others" [1].

• Cognos is just a brand; further products like IBM SPSS (competitor to R-Language and
Excel), InfoSphere Warehouse, ManyEyes etc...
• Prices various, but for SME starts around 1000 $ per user [4,5]
