The role of Forestry to reduce water scarcity on the Near East: achieving results
The FAO Forestry department (FO) will be presenting its work on forest and water related
issues within a watershed management approach, highlighting activities, guidelines and
standards developed to address priorities of the Near East and north Africa Region (NENA).
The presentation will introduce the FO watershed management programme and the Treated
Waste Water Project which will be key in contributing to the Regional Initiative on Water
Scarcity.
Watershed management will work with a landscape approach and combine the following FO
components/areas of work to achieve the targets of the Water Scarcity Initiative:
Soil and water conservation measures
Use of non conventional water
Aforestation in arid zones
Institutional development
Community empowerment
Capacity development
The goal of this session is to discuss with participants how FO’s expertise can best address
the emerging needs in the region and to gain participants’ feed back to allow FAO to plan
and cater its delivery according to regional needs (or demands).
