3. Soil degradation is threatening food security
and water availability, increasing social
economic inequality and depleting ecosystems
in the NENA region, particularly through
desertification.

7. This document aims to uncover the multiple roles of soil
in achieving food security, addressing water scarcity,
climate change and involuntary migration

8. Objectives of this session
• Raise the awareness of policy makers on the multi-
faced role of soil in the NENA Region
• Discuss strategies to strengthen national and
regional legal frameworks aimed at preserving and
sustainably managing soil resources.

9. Future priorities for the Global Soil Partnership
- Continue to work closely with NENA partners as well
as with other Government Departments with an
interest in soil policy in the NENA region;
- Support NENA member countries in promoting and
implementing sustainable soil management activities;
- Advocate for increasing investment in sustainable soil
management at national level in order to improve soil
functions; and
- Support countries in establishing national soil
information and monitoring systems.
