FGV’s Center for International Relations was founded in 2009 to foster the study of global history and international politics. Our twin goals are to promote high-quality scholarly work and to contribute to public debate on the contemporary global order.

2. • FGV’s Center for International Relations was founded in 2009 to foster the
study of global history and international politics. Our twin goals are to promote
high-quality scholarly work and to contribute to public debate on the
contemporary global order.
• We are a unit of the FGV’S School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) that
simultaneously operates in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
• The research interests of our faculty in the past years included the role of rising
powers in global order, Europe seen from the outside, nuclear politics, the past
and present of Brazil’s foreign relations, global and transnational history, and
international relations.
• The Center also explores FGV’s standing as a think-tank to engage the policy
world. We do this through a series of workshops and seminars that seek to
bridge the gap between academia and government, and we do our best to
publicize major findings widely.

3. • The Center receives applications for visiting positions extending from
periods of a few weeks up to a full academic year. When in residence at
FGV they conduct their own research activities and will normally give a
lecture or a seminar that summarizes major findings.
• Applications for the position should be forwarded in the format of a
reasoning, containing a research project and a curriculum. They will be
evaluated by the Coordination Council of CPDOC.

4. • Since its creation, the Center for IR
develops several initiatives in
International Relations and Global
History education. The main goal of our
activities is to promote an
interdisciplinary approach to
International Relations with excellency,
that combines other disciplines such as
Social Sciences, History, Law and
Economics.
Teaching
• Our Executive Program in International Relations has the same approach as a
minor at undergraduate level. All FGV undergraduate students can attend the
courses and get the certificate for the Executive Program.

5. • On postgraduate level, we offer an MBA in
International Relations, which is an eighteen
month course, aimed at professionals of different
areas such as consulting, international business
and journalism, providing analytical tools to deal
with international environment issues critically.
Teaching
• In addition, through CPDOC postgraduate program in
History, Politics and Cultural Goods the Center offers
orientation for master and doctorate level students in
the International Relations research field. Some of the
topics researched include global change and emerging
powers, regional integration processes, EU foreign
policy, compared foreign policy, international security
and global history.

6. • The Center for International Relations has worked together and received
financing from valuable partners throughout the years. Sponsorships can
be directed towards research, events, publications or scholarships for
students and to tighten our bonds with the international academia.
• Since our foundation, the Center has had the support of over several
national and international partners. Among the national partners, we can
mention partnerships with government institutions, such as CAPES,
CNPq, FINEP and FAPERJ. Among international agencies, we can
highlight the partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the Swiss
National Science Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the
European Comission, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation,
Stanton Foundation, Volkswagen Stiftung, among others.

interviews, press pieces, academic papers, books and book chapters.
