48. Background
Tanya Menendez
CEO and Co-Founder,
Snowball Wealth
My parents are immigrants from
Nicaragua 🇳🇮and El Salvador 🇸🇻
I’m the first in my family to be a full time
CEO
I learned from my parents that we aren’t
defined by the circumstances we are
born in
#PrimeroPasos @makertanya
49. My Career
2009 - Strategy and Integration Team
#PrimeroPasos @makertanya
2012-2017 - Co-Founder and COO/CMO
2019 - Co-Founder and CEO
2010-2011 - Analyst
2017-2019 - Break + Consulting—
50. Lesson 1: There is No Playbook.
No one will ever tell you that you are ready.
You don’t need anyone’s permission.
It will always feel scary and intimidating to do something for the
first time.
Take it one step at a time.
#PrimeroPasos @makertanya
51. Lesson 2: Bet on Yourself and Dream Big.
Create a vision for your future without restriction.
Anything is possible, but you have to be both patient and
determined.
Each time you reach a new milestone, you'll keep gaining
confidence to get to the next one, and the next one.
#PrimeroPasos @makertanya
52. Know that it is normal to feel lonely, especially if you are the first in your
family to work in tech, or the first to start a business.
Your family might not understand or even support you in the beginning
but be patient.
Reframe this as an opportunity to pave the way for future Latinx and to
increase representation.
#PrimeroPasos @makertanya
Lesson 3: Keep Pushing.
53. Continuously focus on your personal growth.
Read books on the industries you are interested in, attend webinars
and events, follow people you admire on Linkedin, Instagram and
Twitter.
Create a support system: I personally have an executive coach and
group of founders who I talk to on a regular basis.
#PrimeroPasos @makertanya
Lesson 4: Scale Yourself.
54. Last Thoughts: Being Latinx
What I learned from my Latinx and immigrant heritage:
• Grit
• Determination
• Drive
• Ability to learn quickly
• Take risks
• Perspective
