There are two main groups of forklift counterweights:
Bulk type – a single metal casting or a hollow metal container with mix
of concrete and metal.
Stack type – cast metal plates stacked onto a base plate or an
existing bulk. This design enables weight change.

6. MATERIAL SELECTION FOR A HIGH-QUALITY FORKLIFT COUNTERWEIGHT
Grey cast iron is the best option.
WHY?
1. Density: Iron is denser than most materials and able to achieve the target weight in less
space and volume compared to concrete.
2. Cost: Cast iron doesn’t need any additional aggregates to improve its density.
3. Resistance: Cast iron is stronger and harder than concrete.
4. Shaping: Cracking is less likely to occur, when creating a finer shape on cast iron.
5. Environmental impact: Cast iron doesn’t require extraction of new raw materials.
