Data
Data is a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables.
DEFINITIONS
Information
Information usually has some meaning or purpose, and has typically
been processed with a particular aim or objective in mind (e.g. to be
used to make a decision).
Knowledge
Knowledge is the interpretation of information using human
understanding based on study and experience.
Wisdom
which combines knowledge with experience and judgement, and
which allows us to better understand what knowledge, information
and data we need in order to be able to make an effective decision.

“Data” What it really means ????
Most of the time in Asset Management Industry .....
when we use the term “data”, we are generally also
referring to “information” and occasionally
“knowledge” – especially when this knowledge is
captured in the form of documents and
procedures.
There are 9 Categories of Data which required for
Local Government asset management.

1. Asset Identifiers location & descriptions
Asset Description and Identification – data
used to identify, describe and locate the asset.
Will also define assets in terms of position in
asset hierarchy.

2.Detailed Technical Data
Asset Description and Identification – data used to
individualise this asset from similar assets. Data used for
design and asset planning purposes

3. Condition Data
Condition Monitoring – data used to assess and rank the
physical condition of the assets at a point in time and
establish its remaining useful life. The rate of
deterioration can be determined through subsequent
condition assessments which allows the life of the asset,
and the time by which it may not be able to deliver the
level of service required, to be predicted.
Data is also used for long term works program
development, asset planning, for the preparation of
deterioration models, revision of effective life. and
current valuation. .

4. Valuation Data
Financial Reporting– data used to value the assets,
record and track depreciation and get an understanding
of the actual lives of the assets.

Maintenance Management – data used to respond to
customer requests, generate works orders, develop
planned maintenance programs monitor work and report
on maintenance activities undertaken.

Predictive Modeling - data used to prepare decay
curves, predict the future condition and service level
under any given budget scenario.
Budget Planning/Financial forecasting -Various
funding scenarios are undertaken to determine:-

7. Treatment Analysis Data
Long Term Capital Works Planning
The data used to develop long term capital works
programs including a detailed analysis of all treatment
options, treatment optimisation and prioritisation
analysis takes into account the following factors:
risk, utilisation, maintenance, operations, life extension,
age and condition of asset, treatment options and cost.
The method of deciding on the most appropriate option
is to determine the one with the lowest lifecycle cost for
the asset providing the highest level of service

8. Risk Data
Risk Management and Capital Works Prioritisation –
data used to analyse an asset’s failure and determine
the risk to the organisation if the asset were to fail.
Capital works projects are prioritised using a risk based
approach. Higher the risk score the higher the priority
ranking.

AM Plan development – data used to develop AM
Plans, plan future asset strategies, determine future
costs associated with operations, maintenance, creation,
renewal, disposal of assets.
