Social media has the potential to be a force for both good and evil. It can enable positive social change and advocacy by allowing rapid coordination of large groups, as seen with the million person march against pork barrel in the Philippines organized on Facebook. However, social media also enables the rapid spread of misinformation and abuse, as seen with the Catholic church facing lawsuits over child abuse that went viral online. While social media allows for communication across distances, it has also taken over people's lives and enabled fraud and self-centeredness and broken relationships. Overall, social media is a tool that can mobilize groups for

19. ICT – a force for
SOCIAL REFORM
On January 17, 2001, during the impeachment trial
of Philippine President Joseph Estrada, loyalists in
the Philippine Congress voted to set aside key
evidence against him. Less than two hours after the
decision was announced, thousands of Filipinos,
angry that their corrupt president might be let off
the hook, converged on Epifanio de los Santos
Avenue, a major crossroads in Manila. The protest
was arranged, in part, by forwarded text messages
reading, "Go 2 EDSA. Wear blk." The crowd quickly
swelled, and in the next few days, over a million
people arrived, choking traffic in downtown Manila.

SOCIAL REFORM
THE THREE FACES OF SOCIAL MEDIA
1. The Good – used for communication where
distance no longer matter.
2. The Bad – allowed people to hide behind
screens and avatars and it has taken over our
lives rather than us being in control.
3. The Ugly – it has become a common cause to
broken relationships, self-centeredness and
egocentricity. It is also for frauds and child
abuse.
