Today I’ll be talking about success on WPSharing our approach which has plenty of nonconventional and rebellious approachesI hope you’ll find some valuable ideas and transform them so it will work for you

Our project
WorkedTwo advices:Enter Imagine CupAdvice for today: do whatever it takes to get your demo working so you can present your idea.
Lesson learnt: extra hourHave your demo working, no matter what
After that brief Cocktail Flow demo let’s get back to the topic.Today I’d like to talk about three important thingsWindows Phone is as big of an opportunity as it will beTalking through steps that worked for us Most importantly how being a rebel helped us
Marketplace: WP: 100K, Android: 550K, iOS: 650KMarket: was pretty tiny, now expected to grow rapidlyBoth are going to explode
Flashlight 7 1st part, typical goldrush storyRise of alternative instagram appsAlternative news appsNew devices, new capabilitiesMy Flashlight app doesn’t work on the 920, help needed

How we buillt our appsWhat commonpatterns we found
This will suck your users inFor me design means Photoshop, UX animationsProbably oversimplifying it
For those people who’ve notseen Cocktail Flow, here is a videoSorry for people sick of the app (looking Windows Phone designers who always get benchmarked against this app)
This will suck your users inFor me design means Photoshop, UX animationsProbably oversimplifying it
I think design / UX Is the most important partLet me go through the steps we did in Cocktail Flow, Weather Flow and AppFlowHopefully this will showcase the common patterns
Clean and “content, not chrome” guidelinesTrue for some apps, not for our cocktail appBranding
Something pretty uncommon in Windows Phone appsGives a unique look and feel to the appGradient button storyWe like to call it embracing Metro
Animation tweaking. We actually almost went for a different approach. Except it didn’t scale, performance issues
Design/ UX gets users onboardContent will keep them thereThese are pretty trivial things, but if you get it wrong your app will be throwawayWhen I say content I mean functionality as well – these two usually go hand in hand, except for simple utility apps
More important than you thinkCF: started thinking about marketing when we had our first prototypeI’m sure CFwouldn’t have gained the reputation if it wasn’t for our marketing
Learned:who will watch these videos? Idea: public. Reality: reviewersAdvice: make it short and sweet. I mean professional. We usually work up to 2 days on a video. Only gets a few thousand views, but gets us into the news.On a sidenote: if you want to get featured on a larger site, e.g. TechCrunch, this is your best shot
- This is what we did for MIX
This isnot visible. The lack of it isFor us quality == you would be proud to give this app to anyoneNo platform excuses
Three storiesCocktail Flow virtual listsAppFlow loading timesThrowing out bindings and MVVM from CF and AppFlow on animation pagesOur approach: fix performance issues. If you can’t fix it, cut the feature.Have these paid off? Some user feedback, helped our reputation and rating
Something that took us a lot of effort to work aroundAnimation is in XNA for smoothnessIf you want better UX than anyone else you need to use different tools than everyone else
This isnot visible. The lack of it isFor us quality == you would be proud to give this app to anyoneNo platform excuses
Summing it up these are the four main steps we followed with our apps.During design we focused on visuals and especially animationsWe either built or sourced our content, put lots of energy in thisLots of effort on the quality of our apps, especially performance and no memory leaksMarketing is super important, got best results when we started building relationships before release. This is pretty demanding job during development, after we had relationships in place didn’t bother.
Third thing I’d like to talk aboutEasy to say, hard to do.I’ll give you some examples on how we think we’re different than most app developers6 examples
- CF story
- CF story
Been around for a whileWe can learn from them
- WF story
Most of Windows Phone users don’t speak EnglishCosts less than one would assumeVery few developers are doing thisIf you localize, marketing it on those forums as well
- Italy, Russia, Spain, Brazil, US, China
Mainstream developers will think you’re crazyWeather Flow story
That wraps up what I wanted to share todayOh, one thing: everything said today for WP applies for Windows 8 as well
