WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
Modern life is unthinkable without electricity. We communicate,
compute and travel faster than ever before due to the gadgets run by
electricity. These gadgets have made our lives more convenient and
safer. But what lies at the heart of these gadgets? How exactly does
electricity make them function? What is electricity in the first place
and where does it come from?

1. Explain the electron theory;
2. Describe the different sources of electricity;
3. Expound the properties of magnets; and
4. Discuss what a magnetic field is.

THE ELECTRON THEORY
•It is now accepted and used to explain the behavior
of electricity.
•It states that electric current consists of electron flow
and can be defined as a moving charge.
THE ELECTRON THEORY
•Electricity can be defined, then, as charged matter.
Because an electron, even though smaller than the
smallest known microscopic organism, has mass and
occupies space, it is matter.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•Recall that all materials are composed of tiny
materials called molecules, which are also made up
of even tinier particles called atoms.

•Recall that all materials are composed of tiny
materials called molecules, which are also made up
of even tinier particles called atoms. Two or more
different kinds of atoms form a compound.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•Sir Joseph John Thomson, Ernest Rutherford,
Niels Henrik David Bohr, and Arnold Johannes
Wilhelm Sommerfeld studied the structure of an
atom in detail.

•Their studies showed that, an atom has a
nucleus in the center containing neutrons and
protons.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•Revolving at great speeds in regular, circular, or
elliptical orbits around the nucleus are the
electrons.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•Protons carry positive charge; electrons carry
negative charge and neutrons are neutral
carrying neither positive nor negative charge.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•Under normal conditions, the number of
electrons and protons in an atom are equal and
so the atom is neutral.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•The negative charge of the electrons is balanced
by the positive charge of the protons.
•Within the atom, electrons can move while
neutrons and protons cannot.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATTER
•Electrons are bound in their orbit by the
attraction of the protons. These are referred to
as bound electrons.
IONS AND IONIZATION
•Under normal circumstances, atoms are neutral.
•However, if for some reason a few electrons are torn away from a neutral
atom, the atom becomes "charged" and is called a positive ion (cation).
Whereas, if the electrons that are torn away from the neutral atom gather on
some other neutral atom, that atom becomes negatively charged and is
called a negative ion (anion).
IONS AND IONIZATION
•In other words, an ion is what is left after an
electron has been knocked loose from a neutral
atom, or what is created after an electron is
added to a previously neutral atom.

•The process of an atom gaining electrons or losing
electrons is called ionization.
•Any atom or molecule which carries either a positive
or a negative charge is ionized.
IONS AND IONIZATION
•Some materials, such as table salt and sulfuric acid,
become ionized when mixed with water. The solution,
however, remains neutral. Ionization in gases may result
from the collision of two gas molecules, by electron
bombardment, or by illumination with a certain kind of light.

•The protons within an atom are much heavier than the
electrons.
•Therefore, in an atom of gas, the electrons knocked loose
when ionization occurs will move much more easily if some
electric force is applied than will the much heavier protons.

•Ionization of gases is important to you because it happens in
electronic equipment, such as radio and television receivers.
•During the study of electron tubes, many of which are like those at
home radio receivers, you will see that ionization is sometimes
desirable and at other times undesirable.
FREE ELECTRONS
•Electrons in the outer orbit can become free by the
application of some external force such as movement
through a magnetic field, friction, or chemical action.
•These are referred to as free electrons.
FREE ELECTRONS
•A free electron leaves a void which can be filled by an
electron forced out of orbit from another atom.
•As free electrons move from one atom to the next an
electron flow is produced. This is the basis of electricity.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
•Although this module is mainly about charges in motion, a
good understanding of static fields will be helpful to you.
•That certain objects attract paper and other light materials
when rubbed with various kinds of cloth has been known a
long time.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
•The early Greeks were familiar with this method of
producing what is now called static electricity.
•They knew that amber, which they called electron,
attracted light objects when rubbed with cloth.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
•The English words electron and electricity are derived
from this Greek word for amber.
•A great deal of our early knowledge about electricity was
obtained by experiments on charged bodies, or electricity, at
rest.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
•When static electricity converts to energy, the effects can
sometimes be quite startling.
•Lightning discharges and the crackling sound in a radio receiver
are manifestations of static electricity, releasing its stored - up
energy.
