3. WHAT IS SLAVERY?
Someone is in slavery if they are:
 forced to work - through mental or physical threat;
 owned or controlled by an “employer,” usually through
mental or physical abuse or the threat of abuse;
 dehumanized, treated as a commodity or bought and
sold as property;
 physically constrained or has restrictions placed on
his/her freedom of movement.

 21-30 million people in slavery
 Traffickers earn 150 billion dollars each year
 78% are labor slaves, 22% are sex slaves
 26% are children under age 18
 India has the largest number of slaves in the world: 14
million
 Mauritania has the highest percentage of population in
slavery: 4%

 Profits for owners and traffickers
 Low level of education
 Unemployment
 Inefficient customs check
 Customers are not well-informed
 War booty

10. WHAT CAN WE DO?
 Join anti-slavery organizations
 Raise funds for anti-slavery organizations
 Raise public awareness through campaigns, concerts,
exhibitions etc.
 Volunteer in slave-exporting countries
 Vote for anti-slavery laws
