Emulsion (latin emulgeo - “to milk”) – is a coarse dispersed system,
consisting of immiscible fluids.
There are two types of emulsion: droplets of nonpolar fluid in polar
medium (oil-in-water), and vice versa (water-in-oil).

11. What is Modified Bitumen?
Modified bitumen is improved by adding certain substances (polymer, rubber crumbs,
sulfur, adhesion additives etc). Polymer-bitumen binder is polymer-modified bitumen.
Bitumen with natural resin is called bitumen-resin binder, and bitumen with rubber crumbs is
referred to as bitumen-rubber binder.
The main reason for adding polymer to the bitumen is to reduce the temperature sensitivity
of the binder, i.e. to increase its rigidity in summer and reduction thereof in winter, as well as
improving the binder’s elasticity, that is, the ability for recoverable deformation across the
operating temperature range.
Inspection of road pavement in various climatic zones indicates that using polymer-modified
binder improves the cracking resistance of roads, bridges, airport pavements by 1.5 – 3
times.
