2. GENERAL AWARENESS – SEPTEMBER 2016 1
Rio Olympics
2016
Olympic Games are the world’s biggest sports
extravaganza held every four years to recognize and
honour world’s best in various sports events. They
are also known as Summer Games. Two years after
these games, Winter Olympics are held at a different
venue, a cold place, at four year intervals.
Next Summer Olympics will be hosted by Tokyo,
Japan in July, 2020.
HISTORY
According to historical records, the first ancient
Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They
were dedicated to the Olympian Gods and were held
in the city of Olympia in Greece. They continued for
nearly 12 centuries, until Emperor Theodosius
decreed in 393 A.D. that all such "pagan cults"
(referring to religions other than Christianity) be
banned.
MODERN OLYMPICS
Several attempts were made after 400 AD to restart
the Olympic Games but none could succeed for a
long time. The breakthrough came in June, 1894
when International Olympic Committee was formed
in Paris as an independent not for profit organization
committed to build a better world through sports.
The 1st Olympic Games of the modern era opened in
Athens, Greece on 6 April 1896. 241 athletes from
14 nations took part in 43 events of the first
Olympics. Headquarters of IOC are located at
Lausanne, Switzerland and it is headed by its
President, Thomas Bach.
OLYMPIC SYMBOLS
Main symbol of Olympic Games is a set of five
interlaced rings of equal dimensions, in five different
colours, which are, from left to right, blue, yellow,
black, green and red on a white background. It is
said that they represent the five continents –
Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania; but in
no particular order or colour association. They also
represent the colours of the flags of almost all the
participating countries.
Olympics Flag: It is in white colour with five
Olympic rings in the middle.
The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin
words:
Citius - Altius - Fortius. These words mean
Faster - Higher - Stronger.
MEDALS: Winners of different events are awarded
three medals - Gold, Silver and Bronze. The gold
medals are made with silver at 92.5 per cent
purity, coated with at least 5 gram of pure gold.
Each medal weighs around 500 gram. The medals
depict picture of Nike, Greek Goddess of victory, with
the inscription of particular games. For example,
this time the inscription is: “XXXI Olympiada Rio
2016”. Back of the medals features laurel leaves – a
symbol of victory in the ancient Greece, in the form
of the wreaths awarded to competition winners.
They surround the logo of the respective games, this
year – logo of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
RIO OLYMPICS 05 to 21 August at Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil
First step to beginning of Summer Olympics started
with the traditional flame-lighting ceremony in
Olympia (Greece) at the Temple of Hera on April 21,
2016. The torch is lighted with the help of focusing
of sun rays. The torch is carried in relay by
prominent sports persons to the main Olympics
venue. It will reach at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio
on 5 August for lighting of the cauldron during the
Opening Ceremony of the Games.
It will have 42 games, 306 events, 37 venues.
More than 10,000 participants from 206 countries
will be competing for 812 gold, 812 silver and
864 bronze medals.
THE MASCOT: Vinicius,
the mascot for the Olympic
Games Rio 2016 is made
up of a blend of animals
native to Brazil, and
symbolises the energy and
enthusiasm exuded by the
Brazilian people. It has
been named after one of
Brazil’s most prominent
20th century cultural icons,
great musician Vinicius des
Moraes.
Official slogan: A New World
INDIA AT OLYMPICS: India is sending its biggest
ever contingent of 106 sportspersons for Rio
