2. Introduction
1. What is an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?
It is a set of guidelines and principles that govern the use of digital facilities and
equipment at a school.
2. What is the purpose of an AUP?
To keep learners and staff safe on the Internet;
To control learners’ and staff’s use of the Internet without harming others nor
negatively affecting school’s mandate;
To promote ethical uses of digital facilities for learning & teaching purposes.
3. Why do Namibian schools need AUPs?
Schools are using ICTs and therefore need guidelines on how to regulate their use to
ensure they are appropriately used for learning purposes.
4. Why do different schools need different policies?
Because the digital circumstances of each school are different and the policy should
speak to their unique realities.
3. AUP Task Procedure
1. Read through the Appropriate Use Policy examples given and familiarize
yourself with the content and structure
2. Understand the profile of the school category assigned to you
3. Brainstorm individually and later as a group to gather ideas of
technology use guidelines for the school type assigned
4. Draft the AUP policy
5. Share the draft with the lecturer & colleagues (PowerPoint): on the 19
September 2016 during practical class
6. Use the feedback given to finalize the policy
7. Share the policy on Moodle (group submission folder would be created)
