Who invented Hawk-eye??
It was developed by engineers at Roke Manor Research Ltd in
Romsey, England, in 2001. The patent is held by Paul Hawkins and
David Sherry.
Dr.Paul Hawkins who used to be a cricketer and played for country
side Buckinghamshire. He has PHD in artificial intelligence.
What is Hawk-eye system??
Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system used officially
in numerous sports such as cricket, tennis, football,
badminton, hurling, Rugby Union, association football
and volleyball, to visually track the trajectory of the ball
and display a record of its statistically most likely path as
a moving image.
History of Hawk-eye System…
The system was first used during a Test
match between Pakistan and England at
Lord’s Cricket Ground, on 21 April 2001
It was first used in Tennis in the 2006
US Open.
So, basically this system is in
the field of
Cricket
Tennis
Association Football
Snooker
Australian football
Badminton
Computer games
How it works?All Hawk-Eye systems are based on the principles of
triangulation using visual images and timing data provided
by a number of high-speed video cameras located at
different locations and angles around the area of play. The
system rapidly processes the video feeds from the cameras
and ball tracker. A data store contains a predefined model of
the playing area and includes data on the rules of the game.
Now what is principles of
triangulation?
Hawk-Eye system is based on the principle of
‘triangulation’. Triangulation is the process of finding the
location of a point by measuring the angles between the
point and other points which are fixed.
The Hawk-Eye system
consists of two significant parts:
The Tracking System which contains a camera and speed
gun, and
The Video Replay System, which tracks the data to help
referees make decisions, and help coaches and players to
analyses their game.

In cricketThe system automatically calculates the following
information:
The speed of the ball leaving the bowler’s hand.
The swing of the ball from the bowler’s hand to its ‘pitch’, or
bounce
How much the ball has bounced
How much the ball spun sideways off the wicket
A prediction of where the ball would have passed the
stumps
In tennisHawk-Eye cameras are placed high above the court to track the
‘trajectory’ (or path) of the ball.
It can point out the bounce of the ball up to the precision of 3.6mm.
The cameras record the movement of ball at the rate of 100 frames
per second.
The Hawk-Eye System can incorporate more video replay cameras for
analysis from different angles, which can be controlled remotely.
The video is captured and stored digitally on hard disks.
In Association footballHawk-Eye is one of the goal-line technology (GLT) systems
authorized by FIFA. Hawk-Eye tracks the ball, and informs
the referee if a ball fully crosses the goal line into the goal.
The purpose of the system is to eliminate errors in
assessing if a goal was scored.

requirements?
There are three types of software for the Hawkeye
range: real-time data acquisition ‘Onlooker Live’ and
office-based analysis software ‘Processing Toolkit’ and
‘Data Viewer.’
All software in the Hawkeye suite is Windows based,
using the very latest intuitive tools to make analysis of
the data an efficient and easy task.
Advantages.
It gives a prediction as accurate as 99.99 percent.
It’s a very effective system which works in real time.
It minimizes the chances of human error in decision
making.
It helps players to study their past games and improve.
Disadvantages.
The system is very expensive.
The system needs complex arrangements.
Sometimes Hawk-Eye struggles with predicting the
trajectory of a cricket ball after it bounces while
spinning.
Sometimes it challenges umpires dignity.
ConclusionThis technology helps referees and other umpires to make the correct
decisions in any kind of game.
It is a great tool which can be used by players and coaches to analyses
previous games and come up with strategies for future ones.
However it is very difficult and complicated to set up, and very
expensive.
This means it can only really be used by very big and important
sporting organizations, and can’t really be used by smaller sports or
teams.
If we can find a way of making Hawk-Eye cheaper and easier to use, it
will be very useful for many sports.

  • 3. Who invented Hawk-eye?? It was developed by engineers at Roke Manor Research Ltd in Romsey, England, in 2001. The patent is held by Paul Hawkins and David Sherry. Dr.Paul Hawkins who used to be a cricketer and played for country side Buckinghamshire. He has PHD in artificial intelligence.

Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system used officially in numerous sports such as cricket, tennis, football, badminton, hurling, Rugby Union, association football and volleyball, to visually track the trajectory of the ball and display a record of its statistically most likely path as a moving image.
  • 5. History of Hawk-eye System… The system was first used during a Test match between Pakistan and England at Lord’s Cricket Ground, on 21 April 2001 It was first used in Tennis in the 2006 US Open.

How it works?All Hawk-Eye systems are based on the principles of triangulation using visual images and timing data provided by a number of high-speed video cameras located at different locations and angles around the area of play. The system rapidly processes the video feeds from the cameras and ball tracker. A data store contains a predefined model of the playing area and includes data on the rules of the game.
  • 8. Now what is principles of triangulation? Hawk-Eye system is based on the principle of ‘triangulation’. Triangulation is the process of finding the location of a point by measuring the angles between the point and other points which are fixed.

  • 10. The Hawk-Eye system consists of two significant parts: The Tracking System which contains a camera and speed gun, and The Video Replay System, which tracks the data to help referees make decisions, and help coaches and players to analyses their game.

The cameras record the movement of ball at the rate of 100 frames per second. The Hawk-Eye System can incorporate more video replay cameras for analysis from different angles, which can be controlled remotely. The video is captured and stored digitally on hard disks.

It is a great tool which can be used by players and coaches to analyses previous games and come up with strategies for future ones. However it is very difficult and complicated to set up, and very expensive. This means it can only really be used by very big and important sporting organizations, and can’t really be used by smaller sports or teams. If we can find a way of making Hawk-Eye cheaper and easier to use, it will be very useful for many sports.
