1. Getting Started: 2013 AADE HealthSlate™ Tablet
Getting help
If you need help in configuring, charging or using your AADE HealthSlate, start by using this
guide or the in product help guide. If you cannot find the answers you seek there please

Turning AADE HealthSlate On and Off
You can turn the tablet on and off by pressing and holding down the Power button at the top of
the tablet. When turning AADE HealthSlate on you need to hold the Power button down for about
eight seconds. When turning AADE HealthSlate off you will see a prompt asking you to confirm
that you want to turn it off. You need to click OK.
Dealing with “Crashes” and “Freezes”
We do not expect AADE HealthSlate to freeze or crash on you. We have tested it extensively.
However, in the unlikely event that this does happen, dealing with it is quite simple. A “freeze” is
when all of the buttons or links in AADE HealthSlate all stop working. If AADE HealthSlate
freezes you should just “re-boot,” i.e., turn it off and then back on again. You might need to hold
down the Power button for 10 seconds to get it to power down if it is frozen. A “crash” is when the
AADE HealthSlate interface disappears and the only thing you see is a small AADE HealthSlate
icon on the screen. If you experience a crash just touch the AADE HealthSlate icon to re-launch
the software.

3. Battery and Charging
How to Charge Your AADE HealthSlate
You should keep your AADE HealthSlate charged in order to avoid fully draining the battery,
which can damage it, and in order to avoid running out of battery during the work day. We
recommend you keep the charger near your desk or somewhere you can easily access it to plug
it in.
To charge the battery in your AADE HealthSlate you need to plug the POWER CORD that came
with it into the MINI USB PORT on the side of the tablet. Plug the other end into any standard
wall outlet (110 volt.) Note that not all mini USB power cords work with AADE HealthSlate.
Because the port is recessed only power cords with an extended USB plug will work. For this
reason you should only use the power cord that shipped with the product.
How to know if your AADE HealthSlate is charging
Regardless of whether your AADE HealthSlate is on or off, if your AADE HealthSlate is charging
you will see a reddish orange light in the top right corner of the front face of the tablet. If your
AADE HealthSlate is turned on you will also be able to tell if it is chargi ng as well as the battery’s
current capacity by looking at the icon in the lower left corner of the Home Screen. If the battery is
charging the battery indicator will show an animation of power being added to the battery.
How to minimize battery drain
The greatest causes of battery drain is the use of the display (the screen). The longer the display
is in use and the brighter you set the display, the quicker the battery will drain. When you are not
actively using your AADE HealthSlate you should turn off the display. You can do this by briefly
pressing the Power button at the top of the tablet. You can turn the display back on by pressing
the Power button again. You can adjust the how quickly the screen will automatically turn off as
well as the display’s brightness level by going to Settings and clicking Display Settings.
Projecting to an External TV or LCD Projector
Projecting the tablet
You can project whatever is on the AADE HealthSlate display to an external big screen TV or
LCD projector by using the Mini HDMI port on the side of AADE HealthSlate. This will allow you to
project videos, diagrams, animations and games in a group class setting, for example
Cable requirement for connecting tablet
The cable you need to do this carries both the video and audio signals. It is a “male Mini HDMI to

4. male HDMI” cable. As a surprise gift, we included this cable in the box that your AADE
HealthSlate came with.
How to connect the HDMI cable
The smaller “Mini HDMI” end goes into your AADE HealthSlate; the larger “full” HDMI end goes
into your TV or LCD projector. Note that on both the Mini and full ends the connector is not
symmetrical; you need to line up the connector’s short and longs sides with the short and long
sides of the ports on the tablet and TV/project or. You might also need to change the “Source” on
your TV or Projector to be the same as the HDMI port you used for the full HDMI connector.
Because the HDMI port is recessed within the AADE HealthSlate case, you must press the Mini
HDMI connector very firmly into the port.
What to do if nothing appears on the screen
If you do not see anything on your external screen or projector after connecting the cables, check
to make sure the external device is ON and set to the correct HDMI source/input. If you are sure it
is connected and working properly, pull the Mini HDMI connector out of the AADE HealthSlate
and then push it back in harder. However, do not push it so hard that you will break the pins.
How to connect a TV or projector that does not have an HDMI input
If your TV or Projector does not have an HDMI input, you will need to use an HDMI-to-VGA
adapter, which you can purchase at www.healthslate.com/store. This cable is 6 feet long and has
a mini HDMI input that fits the recessed HDMI port on your HealthSlate. The other end has a
VGA male connector. Note that VGA does not carry audio signals so if you want to show the
diabetes videos, including the sound, you will either need to play the audio from your tablet’s
speakers or you can connect the headphone jack on the HealthSlate to an audio input on your
projector with the included audio cable. Be sure you have selected the correct audio input on your
projector.
Navigating AADE HealthSlate
Getting to the Home Page
You can usually get to the AADE HealthSlate Home Page by touching the Back button once or
more or tapping the HealthSlate logo at the upper left screen.
Switching Between Modules
AADE HealthSlate is composed of various modules such as Teaching Aids, Games, Medications
and Alerts. The way to move from one module to another is to click the Home icon in the top left
corner then touch the desired module name in the left hand column.

5. Zooming In and Out on the Display
On some of the pages it is possible to make text or an image appear larger or smaller by placing
two fingers (usually your thumb and index finger) on the display at the same time and spreading
them apart or moving them together.
Patient Mode
You might want to give your AADE HealthSlate to a patient for a variety of reasons, such as to
perform a knowledge assessment, help them find product discounts, or to give them something
educational to do while waiting for a class or consult. Patient Mode allows you to do this while
restricting access to only the modules and content appropriate for patients to use on their own.
This includes all of the content in Teaching Aids except the Insulin Animations, the Games
module but without the ability to initiate patient -specific assessments, Savings and Offers, and a
Recipes module that appears only in Patient Mode.
To enter Patient Mode touch the Enter Patient Mode link at the top of the display. To exit Patient
Mode you must enter your PIN (Default 9876). If you want to let a patient watch videos or play
games in Patient Mode but are concerned that the audio volume might be disruptive to other
patients you can use the headphone jack, which is next to the mini USB port.
Switching between English and Spanish
We are working to translate more of the patient-facing content to Spanish. You can switch
between English and Spanish modes by clicking the LNG link at the top of the display. If you have

WiFi FAQ & Help
When and why does my HealthSlate need WiFi?
The tablet is operational offline but needs to download updated clinical information and other
updates every few days. WiFi is also required for certain functionality such as emailing content,
and faxing forms to other healthcare facilities.
How do I connect to WiFi from the tablet?
Clicking on the WiFi icon at the lower left corner of the home page will open the WiFi Setup
screen. Select the appropriate network and enter the password when prompted. HealthSlate can

6. remember multiple network passwords and automatically reconnect to networks for which it has
previously been configured.
Where should I connect?
We strongly recommend using the internal WiFi network at your healthcare facility. You may need
to ask your IT department for the WiFi password and other connection parameters. If you do not
see your internal WiFi network in the Connection Name column of the WiFi Setup page,
your facility might use a “hidden network.” Check with your IT department. If there is a hidden
network, click the “Add Hidden WiFi Network” button at the bottom of the WiFi Setup page and
then enter the Network SSID and, if necessary, password, which you can get from your IT
department. If you cannot connect to any internal network (visible or hidden,) you may be able to
use the guest network at your healthcare facility. If so, follow the directions below for “How do I
connect to a WiFi Hotspot or Guest Network at my Facility?”
How do I connect to a WiFi HotSpot or Guest Network at my facility?
Click the WiFi icon at the lower left of the home page screen. Then click the name of the WiFi
network you want to connect to. After it connects to the WiFi network it will attempt to reach the
Internet. If you are connecting via a hotspot or guest network, the tablet will recognize that and
prompt you to click the HotSpot button at the bottom of the page. (Depending on which version of
HealthSlate software you have you might first need to click Next after connecting to the network.)
This will allow you to accept the Terms of Service for the network. You need to accept the
hotspot’s Terms of Service in order to reach the Internet. Connecting to hotspots and guest
networks will likely require you to log in every time you connect.
What if I cannot use the facility WiFi? Where else can I connect?
We recommend using WiFi at your home. If that is not an option you can periodically use a public
hotspot such as those at McDonald’s or Starbucks. These types of networks can sometimes be
challenging to use depending on how they present their Terms of Service.
How can I confirm I am connected to the HealthSlate servers?
If the WiFi icon in the lower left of the home page screen is not green with the word ON under it
then the tablet cannot reach our servers. If this happens, click the WiFi icon to get to WiFi Setup,
which will walk you through the steps to connect.
