The Church of the Third Order of St. Francis of Penance in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil began construction in 1715 and was completed in 1773. Its placement in the back of the property was due to the small size of the original churchyard, which was later expanded using a retaining wall. The interior of the church is luxuriously decorated in the peak Baroque style characteristic of the period, with magnificent carvings and gilded altars completed between 1726-1739.

studied by Mário Barata (1975), began with the churchyard (1715-38) and was
concluded in 1773, next to the convent church.
Its placement in the back is due to the churchyard’s smaller space, which was
enlarged by the use of a retaining wall.
The interior of the church on the great plateau encompasses the
luxuriousness characteristic of the baroque at the peak of its gold and
diamond mining activities. The internal decoration is magnificent (1726-
1739), according to the joanino phase.
