3. What is Alcohol?
 Is created when grains, fruits, or vegetables
are fermented
 When alcohol is taken, it is absorbed into the
bloodstream
 Depressant
 It reduces a person’s ability to think rationally
and distorts their judgment

In the United States in 2007, the death toll from
teenage drunk-driving accidents was 1,393—
nearly four fatalities every day of the year.

 Drowsiness
 Vomiting
 Diarrhea
 Upset stomach

 Breathing difficulties
 Distorted vision and hearing
 Impaired judgment
 Decreased perception and coordination
 Unconsciousness
 Anemia (loss of red blood cells)
 Coma
 Blackouts (memory lapses, where the drinker cannot remember events
that occurred while under the influence)

diseases
 Liver disease
 Nerve damage
 Sexual problems
 Permanent damage to the brain
 Vitamin B1 deficiency, which can lead to a disorder
characterized by amnesia, apathy and disorientation

10. How do drugs work?
(summarized)
Drugs are chemicals or substances that change
the way our bodies work. When you put them
into your body. They find their way into your
bloodstream and are transported to parts of your
body, such as your brain. In the brain, drugs may
either intensify or dull your senses, alter your
sense of alertness, and sometimes decrease
physical pain.
Did you know?
The 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health
reported 153,000 current heroin users in the US in
2007. Other estimates give figures as high as
900,000.

 Hallucinogens- LSD
 Headshop Drugs- all herbal substances that
give you a high
 Opioids- Morphine
 Painkillers
 Sedatives- Amytal
 Solvents- “glue sniffing”
 Stimulants- cocaine/nicotine

The effects of drugs can vary
depending upon
- the kind of drug taken
- how much is taken
- how often it is used
- how quickly it gets to the brain

13. Why do people take drugs?
Many teens use drugs because
they're depressed or think drugs will help them
escape their problems.
The truth is, drugs don't solve problems. They
simply hide feelings and problems. When a drug
wears off, the feelings and problems come back
and they may become worse.
Drugs can ruin every aspect of a person's life.
