Your Body Language is key to securing a job and having a great interview. Why? Because your body language speaks louder than words. Use these top body language tips to improve your chances of interview success.
2. BE CONSCIOUS….
Job interviews are one of the most commonly used devices for employee selection processes.
They require you to articulate yourself in a particular way to emphasise the following:
• Your personality;
• Your professionalism;
• Your prospects;
• Your goals and ambitions;
• Whether or not you are suitable to the role.
If you are asked to attend an interview, you need to come
across in a particular way!
3. BEFORE THE INTERVIEW…
You will be evaluated even before you enter the interview room. Interviewers will be sizing
you up as soon as you arrive at your interview.
Remember, body language plays a crucial part of interview
processes. you need to understand what your body language is
saying to the interviewers, and what that says about your
character!
4. PACE YOURSELF…
• Deliberately slow down your speech. You don’t want to rush through your answers (this will
not come across well to the interviewers – it is a sign of nerves and possible eagerness to
leave).
• Concentrate on pronouncing your words clearly.
• Make sure that you are focused and engaging. Make sure the tone in your voice is not
maintained at one level. Show enthusiasm by altering your voice to show that you are
interested and eager.
• Whilst speaking, don’t overuse hand signals. Don’t shuffle your feet. Don’t fidget. Sit up
right and place your arms in your lap.
5. NON-VERBAL SIGNALS…
THE HANDSHAKE…
This begins as soon as you are greeted by the interviewers.
• Ensure a firm hand shake. The ‘wet fish’ technique will not go down well with interviewers.
• Make sure you look the interview directly in the eye when you shake their hand. Smile at
them and say something like “It’s a pleasure to meet you!”
• Try to instigate the handshake first! This will show your levels of professionalism and
enthusiasm.
Make sure your CONFIDENCE SHINES!
6. NON-VERBAL SIGNALS…
BODY POSTURE…
Remember, from when you enter the room, to when you leave, you need to articulate yourself
in a professional manner. The easiest way to do this is through your body posture.
• Don’t slouch. This will come across as uninterested and suggest that ‘you don’t care’. Make
sure that at no point during the interview, you lose your body posture. Maintain an upright
posture throughout.
• Remember, don’t fidget. This will show nerves and will be distracting to the interviewer.
Your posture will automatically give the interviewer a certain
perception of you. Make sure you give a good impression!
7. NON-VERBAL SIGNALS…
EYE CONTACT…
Make sure that you ALWAYS look the interviewer in the eye. This will show bundles of
confidence and engagement.
• Avoid glancing around the room. This will again show your nerves. It also suggests that you
may have something to hide.
• NEVER, and I mean never look at the floor. This is unprofessional.
Be confident! Be professional! Be direct!
8. MASTERING THE BODY LANAGUAGE
Your body language can have a significant impact on how you are perceived. Remember the
following:
“It’s not what you say, it’s what you do!”
DON’T: Slouch DON’T: Touch your face
DON’T: Fidget
DO: Gesture
DO: Smile
DO: Speak clearly
DO: Make eye contact
