One of the best features of Akka is Akka Cluster. Akka cluster allows for building distributed applications, where one application or service spans multiple nodes. From its initial release in 2013, Akka Cluster needed a node management system to manage the Akka nodes and to provide resilience and elasticity. With Kubernetes Akka finally has the node management system that is has been waiting for. Akka Cluster has been designed to gracefully handle nodes leaving and joining a running cluster while continuing to run. Kubernetes adds and removes nodes as needed to increase capacity or to recover from failures. In effect, there is a perfect symbiosis between Akka Cluster and Kubernetes. In this talk, we will look at and demonstrate how Akka Cluster and Kubernetes work together and how together they form a beautiful relationship.

Recent momentum around the evolution of Containers are gradually increase in last two years.Containers virtualize an OS and applications running in each container believe that they have full access to their very own copy of that OS. This is analogous to what VMs do when they virtualize at a lower level, the hardware. In the case of containers, it’s the OS that does the virtualization and maintains the illusion. Recent past many software companies have quickly adopted container technologies, including Docker Containers, aware of the threat and advantage of the approach. For example, Linux companies have also jumped into the ground, seeing as this as an opportunity to grow the Linux market. Also Microsoft is going to add features to support containers and VMware have made efforts in integrating support for Docker into virtual machine technology.

Oh, now what? Another technobabble name - megaservice! What is a megaservice? A megaservice is a microservice that is capable of processing up to one million logical operations per second. In this context, the service prefix indicates the expected maximum sustained per second logical operation throughput. In this talk, we will look at the more common deca-service (tens of LOPS), hecto-service (hundreds of LOPS), and kilo-service (thousands of LOPS) implementation techniques. We examine some of the common performance bottlenecks and look at methods to push services to higher throughput levels. I'll share our experiences with a demo microservice application that we are using to push the cloud service providers to their limits. The demo application is composed of two Akka CQRS microservices. The app provides an interactive world map UI that visualizes IoT devices' distribution spread across the planet. With the click of the mouse, we generate thousands, tens of thousands, even millions of IoT devices and observe how various databases and cloud systems react when push to the limit. All of the application code is built using OSS such as Akka, Java, JavaScript, and Kubernetes. The demo app is available for you to use as a learning tool for building your megaservices.

In this talk we’ll build a Drone delivery application, and then use it to do some Machine Learning “on the fly”. In the 1st part of the talk, we’ll build a real-time Drone Delivery demonstration application using a combination of two open-source technologies: Uber’s Cadence (for stateful, scheduled, long-running workflows), and Apache Kafka (for fast streaming data). With up to 2,000 (simulated) drones and deliveries in progress at once this application generates a vast flow of spatio-temporal data. In the 2nd part of the talk, we’ll use this platform to explore Machine Learning (ML) over streaming and drifting Kafka data with TensorFlow to try and predict which shops will be busy in advance. Then, based on the results of call C, call D or E and then return the results to the original caller. Calls to A, B, C, D, and E are all async calls, and none should take longer than 10 seconds. If they do, then return a timeout to the original caller. The whole async call sequence should time out in 20 seconds if it does not complete and should also check for circuit breakers and provide back pressure feedback so the system does not have cascading failures. It's time we moved to a stream-centric view of the world. This talk will look at how Reactive Streams is shaping the future of Jakarta EE. I'll talk about some Reactive Streams based specifications that we're currently working on in the JDK, MicroProfile and Jakarta EE communities, as well as some potential big ideas to transform the way developers write their applications, such as event sourcing and CQRS, that Jakarta EE will likely adopt in future. We'll take a look at a hypothetical future Jakarta EE, at what a typical service will look like when streaming is embraced, and get a glimpse of how Jakarta EE can lead the world in standards for Reactive systems.

Why, in the third decade of the 21st century, after 80 years of writing software, data continues to live in two states, hot data in the compute space and cold data in the persistence state? Of course, data is created and manipulated while in a hot state. Ideally, all data would exist entirely in a hot state when you think about it. However, the reality is that due to the way most computers work, it is necessary to keep only the data that is actively in use in a hot state and push all inactive data out to a cold state persistence layer. This hot and cold data perspective raises the question of why we still have to focus so much attention and effort on dealing with data movement between these two states at the software level. In this talk, we will examine what has led us to this point, why we seem stuck here and look at some possibilities for moving forward. You also see real Java demo examples of an event-driven hot state software approach that inspired this rant and line of thought about seeing data in a hot and cold state way and the profound impact on how we develop software.

There are many design patterns for building microservices, and most of them are wrong. Actually, that is not true. The fundamental objectives for implementing microservice systems are speed and agility. Speed, of course, is how quickly you can get things done. Regardless of what design patterns you use, if you can quickly build, fix, enhance, and rapidly evolve your microservices, you are heading in the right direction. Agility is the flexibility to move rapidly across the entire development lifecycle while living happily in production. But we can always do better. Right? That is what this talk is about. We will take a look at some of the more common microservice design patterns. And we will compare them to some of the alternatives. For example, what is the more common microlith design pattern, and how getting serious about loose coupling guides the evolution to ways that increase your speed and agility? We will also look at why it is micro at the code level and the data level. Finally, we will cover some practical guidelines, such as why your microservices should do the least amount of work while your users are waiting and techniques for doing that.

Event Sourcing & CQRS offers a compelling and often controversial alternative for persisting data in microservice systems environments. This alternate approach is new for most of us, and it is justified to have a healthy level of skepticism towards any shiny new and often over-hyped solution. However, what is interesting is that this is so new that even the champions and evangelists often overlook the real benefits provided by this new way of capturing and storing data. In this talk, we will look at 7 of the top reasons for using Event Sourcing & CQRS. These reasons covered go beyond the often referenced benefits, such as event stores are natural audit logs, or offering the ability to go back in history to replay past events. The primary goal of this talk is to flip your view from limited to no use of ES & CQRS to an alternate perspective of what you give up when you elect to not use it as the go-to persistence strategy. If you are a developer or an architect, the odds are that you grew up building systems that are now commonly known as monoliths. In the last few years, we've seen a significant evolutionary shift to systems composed of microservices. Today we are witnessing the birth of serverless. The rate of evolutionary change is accelerating. But what is changing, and what remains the same? In this talk, we will look at the evolution from the monolith to serverless seeking to extract the variables and the constants. We will also look at the progression from serverless to an inevitable future of frictionless computing.

When building microservices or web apps, we often take the path of least resistance and go with a stateless approach. The justification is that going the stateful route is too hard and too complicated. Based on the state of the tools that we typically use to build apps, going stateless is a wise decision given that the commonly used backend toolsets and frameworks tend to shy away from dealing with distributed, clustered systems. However, with the spectacular rise of Kubernetes, many developers are diving head first into the clustered world. This mass migration to the clustered, scalable, and resilient Kubernetes playing field opens up new opportunities for how we build systems. One of the new ways of doing things is the actor model. In the pre-Kubernetes world, everything is an object; in the post-Kubernetes world, everything is an actor. Actors are fundamental building blocks, like objects, that are stateful, are inherently concurrent, and with the Akka Toolkit, systems of actors naturally exist and collaborate in clustered environments. In this talk, we will explore some theory and code of a live actor system based microservice running in a clustered Kubernetes environment.
