4. *
Tacit – “Qualitative” Explicit – “Quantitative”
*It gets way more complicated than this. This is just a simple breakdown.
Verbal exchanges of information.
Typically stays in your head.
Is the hardest to codify, but is the
most efficient & effective type for
innovative organizations.
Easiest way to rapidly transfer new
knowledge.
Written, or codified, information.
Is documented in manuals,
instructions, books, etc.
Easy to codify; most effective for
organizations in “survival”mode –
those who do they same processes
over and over.
See next two
slides for
examples.

5. KM tools allow leaders
to make high-impact,
real-time decisions
based on data – not
subjective
“guesstimates”…
similar to the warning
on your car’s
dashboard when
you’re out of gas.
Are we on track to
achieving our
organizational goals
as defined by
leadership in the
strategic plan?
Which programs
should we implement
that will help us save
time & money?
What is the
cost-benefit of
doing things
this way?
What are our current
processes, and are they
efficient & effective?
How could
we do things
better?
How much
money
could we
save?
5
6. There are some things
you just can’t put a
price tag on…
Typically, these are
best practices &
lessons learned
shared verbally…
similar to the stories
you hear while ‘round
the water cooler.
What lessons
did we learn?
How could we
do this better
next time?
What was our
impact?
What do we
need to further
research?

7. CHALLENGE
Getting rid of silos of
excellence within
organizations to create
organizations of
excellence.
…And it’s tough
because it’s a
cultural thing.
(That’s why
leadership’s buy-in is
VERY important.)Project? Team? Department? Role?
