IFLA ARL Webinar Series: Open Science milestones in Botswana: Advancing Knowledge Together - A Journey Towards Transparency, Collaboration, and Innovation (Presentation 1)
IFLA ARL Webinar Series | Held online on October 11, 2023
Open science is a new concept that has introduced new ways on how scholarly output has been created, managed, stored, and distributed to the global society. Research and academic institutions have implemented open science initiatives that aim at enhancing academic excellence and addressing societal challenges through knowledge creation and dissemination.
Academic and research libraries are being influenced by the open science movement to reposition and reengineer their functions and roles. They are developing open science initiatives that aim at transforming research, teaching, and learning as well as leveraging on digital technologies that enhance transparency and easy accessibility of data, information and knowledge that is shared, redistributed, and reproduced.
The presenters discussed academic and research libraries’ engagement in the open science movement and shared insights on how their individual libraries have developed and implemented open science policies and effective strategies on embracing open science agenda.

approaches.
• Researchers, institutions, and nations are recognizing the importance of embracing this
shift towards openness
• Botswana, too, has been part of this evolving landscape, however the practices have
been scattered and isolated across the institutions of higher learning, libraries and
research institutions
• Today, we'll delve into Botswana's remarkable journey towards embracing open
science principles
• Botswana’s steps in this field is a demonstration of commitment to adapting and thriving
in this new era of collaborative and transparent research practices.
6. Introduction
• From early 2018 the Botswana Government set to build a knowledge workforce and
relevance towards a Knowledge-based Economy through the Presidents' Reset
Agenda.
• Therefore Botswana’s steps in this field is a demonstration of commitment to support
the President's Reset Agenda that will enable Botswana to compete effectively on a
global platform, with efficient knowledge value additions in place adapting and thriving
in this new era of collaborative and transparent research practices.
• The presentation will we'll explore key milestones, initiatives, and the impact of open
science in Botswana, highlighting its role in advancing knowledge, fostering
international collaboration, and contributing to sustainable development.
7. Introduction………
