Láctea

El plano de la Vía Láctea se ve oscurecido por polvo interestelar.
Vista de todo el cielo en IR
Notar lo bien definido que se observa el plano de la Vía Láctea.
Abundancia de emisión extendida, no estelar (puntitos).
Zonas negras no fueron observadas.
Qué vemos en Vía Láctea?
• Óptico: principalmente estrellas normales, no
“penetra” en regiones con polvo interestelar (smog).
• Infrarrojo: estrellas frías, polvo y gas del medio
interestelar
• Buen trazador de estrellas que están naciendo!
• = Protoestrellas

Regiones de Formación Estelar:
• Regiones S235 y S252 estudiadas por el estudiante
de doctorado Luis Chavarría (Ph.D. 2009,
Universidad de Chile)
• Azul: estrellas normales
• Blanco-verdoso: estrellas naciendo (jóvenes). Luz
blanca-rojiza muy compacta identifica las
protoestrellas más jóvenes
• Rojo extendido: polvo y gas a partir del cual nacen
las estrellas.

Infrarrojo:
• Nos permite ver estrellas en proceso de formación a
través de toda la Galaxia;
• También nos permite ver gas denso a partir del cual nacen
las estrellas;
• Pero:
• No podemos estudiar la dinámica del gas, para ello
necesitamos trazadores de gas molecular que se
observan en radio.
Mapeo de la Galaxia en CO
• 1980s: un telescopio en el norte (Univ. de Columbia en Nueva
York) y otro en el sur (cerro Tololo).
• P. Thaddeus es el investigador principal, Leonardo Bronfman su
estudiante de doctorado. Prof. Jorge May es colaborador en
Universidad de Chile.
• Primer mapa del gas molecular en toda la Galaxia, pero con baja
resolución angular (8 minuros de arco).
• Mapa permite caracterizar los brazos espirales de la Galaxia.
También identificar y caracterizar las grandes regiones de
formación estelar.

WHY BAND 1
Arriba: brillo de emisión molecular en la galaxia (longitud y latitud galácticas).
Abajo: velocidades determinadas por efecto Doppler (longitud y velocidad).
ATLASGAL:
mapeo de la Galaxia en polvo frío
• Brinda mayor sensibilidad y resolución angular (30”), pero
cubriendo sólo la región central de la Galaxia.
• Paso importante entre mapa inicial de CO (8’) y
observaciones con ALMA (0.1”).
• Profs. Leonardo Bronfman, Guido Garay, Diego Mardones.

ATLASGAL somos
capaces de
identificar las
regiones más
oscuras, donde nacen
las estrellas más
jóvenes.
Las flechas indican
regiones visibles con
Atlasgal pero no
detectadas en luz

En rojo aparece la emisión
detectada por Atlasgal; en azul y

Atlasgal traza preferentemente las
regiones de gas molecular y polvo
fríos, donde nacen estrellas. La luz
infrarroja es mucho mejor que el
óptico, pero no tan sensible como
la luz submilimétrica o de radio.

Conclusiones
• Con ALMA estudiaremos el proceso de formación estelar
con precisión extremadamente buena.
• Para ello necesitamos partir con mapas como los realizados
en CO hasta los 1990s y luego ATLASGAL durante la
última década.

ILOA Galaxy Forum Chile 2013 - UChile Diego Mardones

  • 1. Formación Estelar en la Vía Láctea Prof. Diego Mardones Departamento de Astronomía Universidad de Chile
  • 2. Esta Charla: 1. Vistas de nuestra Galaxia en distintos tipos de luz 2. Trazadores de formación estelar: • Monóxido de Carbono • Emisión de polvo a longitudes de onda milimétricas • Emisión de estrellas y polvo en el infrarrojo termal

  • 7. Vista de todo el cielo óptico 360° El plano de la Vía Láctea se ve oscurecido por polvo interestelar.
  • 8. Vista de todo el cielo en IR Notar lo bien definido que se observa el plano de la Vía Láctea. Abundancia de emisión extendida, no estelar (puntitos). Zonas negras no fueron observadas.
  • 9. Qué vemos en Vía Láctea? • Óptico: principalmente estrellas normales, no “penetra” en regiones con polvo interestelar (smog). • Infrarrojo: estrellas frías, polvo y gas del medio interestelar • Buen trazador de estrellas que están naciendo! • = Protoestrellas
  • 10. Vía Láctea en diferente luz: óptico ir CO
  • 11. Vista en el infrarrojo Centro de la Galaxia en el infrarrojo visto por el satélite Spitzer. En rojo se ven preferentemente las regiones donde nacen estrellas.

Regiones de Formación Estelar: • Regiones S235 y S252 estudiadas por el estudiante de doctorado Luis Chavarría (Ph.D. 2009, Universidad de Chile) • Azul: estrellas normales • Blanco-verdoso: estrellas naciendo (jóvenes). Luz blanca-rojiza muy compacta identifica las protoestrellas más jóvenes • Rojo extendido: polvo y gas a partir del cual nacen las estrellas.

Infrarrojo: • Nos permite ver estrellas en proceso de formación a través de toda la Galaxia; • También nos permite ver gas denso a partir del cual nacen las estrellas; • Pero: • No podemos estudiar la dinámica del gas, para ello necesitamos trazadores de gas molecular que se observan en radio.
  • 17. Mapeo de la Galaxia en CO • 1980s: un telescopio en el norte (Univ. de Columbia en Nueva York) y otro en el sur (cerro Tololo). • P. Thaddeus es el investigador principal, Leonardo Bronfman su estudiante de doctorado. Prof. Jorge May es colaborador en Universidad de Chile. • Primer mapa del gas molecular en toda la Galaxia, pero con baja resolución angular (8 minuros de arco). • Mapa permite caracterizar los brazos espirales de la Galaxia. También identificar y caracterizar las grandes regiones de formación estelar.
  • 18. 1980s - 1990s en Cerro Tololo. Hoy en Cerro Calán, para desarrollo tecnológico
  • 19. WHY BAND 1 Arriba: brillo de emisión molecular en la galaxia (longitud y latitud galácticas). Abajo: velocidades determinadas por efecto Doppler (longitud y velocidad).
  • 20. ATLASGAL: mapeo de la Galaxia en polvo frío • Brinda mayor sensibilidad y resolución angular (30”), pero cubriendo sólo la región central de la Galaxia. • Paso importante entre mapa inicial de CO (8’) y observaciones con ALMA (0.1”). • Profs. Leonardo Bronfman, Guido Garay, Diego Mardones. Tesis doctoral de Yanett Contreras (2012).
  • 21. Con los datos de ATLASGAL somos capaces de identificar las regiones más oscuras, donde nacen las estrellas más jóvenes. Las flechas indican regiones visibles con Atlasgal pero no detectadas en luz infrarroja.
  • 22. Mapa ATLASGAL 2009 de la región central (120°) de la Vía Láctea en luz submilimétrica. En rojo aparece la emisión detectada por Atlasgal; en azul y verde luz infrarroja detectada por el satélite Spitzer. El mapa de Atlasgal traza preferentemente las regiones de gas molecular y polvo fríos, donde nacen estrellas. La luz infrarroja es mucho mejor que el óptico, pero no tan sensible como la luz submilimétrica o de radio. W H Y B A N D 1
  • 23. Conclusiones • Con ALMA estudiaremos el proceso de formación estelar con precisión extremadamente buena. • Para ello necesitamos partir con mapas como los realizados en CO hasta los 1990s y luego ATLASGAL durante la última década.
