2. Rationale
Provide the CG Systemand our partnerswith
keyinvestment indicators:
• Locationof R&D focus areas, programs and
actors
• Count of activities, allocated budget, full-
time-equivalent researchers by location,
with possible allocation across:
System IDOs, and CRP IDOs
Commodityvalue-chains
Technologies
• Support for investment analysis and
targeting with partners:
Identify gaps and opportunities to foster
partnershipsat regional, national,and local
scale
4. Background
andHistory
Investment mapping is
embedded into a
number of CGIAR-led
initiatives and multi-
partner alliances with
opportunities but also
potential duplication
of efforts.

5. Resultsand
Timeline
May2014 – Livestock mapping workshop in the Horn of Africa with ILRI and
HoA Technical Consortium (under discussion)
Apr 2014- Release of draft dataschemaand harmonized codelists
Apr2014 - Release of web-based “CGIAR Research Portfolio” for visualization
and data-entry
Mar-2013on-going - Renewed engagement with CRP Teams and CO to collect,
geocode, and harmonize attributes at the “activity” level:
• Aug2013 – Push new data standardsthrough IATI, AGROVOC, Gates Foundation,
USAID..
• Oct2013 - Updated CGIAR R&Dspatial footprint at countrylevel
• Dec2013 – Curation of activity-level records for CRP 1.1, 1.2, 2, 4, 5, 7
• Productionof ashared IATI-ready dataschemafor characterizing activitiesand
locations
Mar 2013 - Mapping handed over to ConsortiumforSpatialInfrastructure and
fully backed by PIM (Third Africa Agriculture GIS Week)
• Identify key CSI Coordinators and CRP focalpoints
• Curationand sharing of CRP agriculturaldomainmaps
Early 2013 - Investment mapping “prototype” (collection of activities and
domain maps extracted from CRP investment proposals)Mid-2012
Mid-2014
Another category of open data: what we do, where? Donors are constrained to this level of transparency and they expect the CG to follow suit. Why HarvestChoice is involved? Was leading CSI in 2012. Mandate to provide harmonized spatially reference data layers for SSA. Need to combine biophysical, socio-economic with investment data (to support baselining, investment planning). HarvestChoice was tasked to scale up the geo-coding of CGIAR and SROs activities through CRP2/PIM. Relate investment data to output. Member of CSI, large USAID M&E, where open data is a deliverable.
Not just make pretty maps. Very much inscribed in the new CG OA policy, providing a little more evidence of impact along the R&D continuum.
Very much inscribed in the new CG OA policy, providing a little more evidence of impact along the R&D continuum. Mapping on the left. Help close the loop between progress or changes on the ground on our more long-term planning processes.
Background, original impulse under the Dublin process, ideas very much carried over into the early discussion on the G8/NA agenda, in line with many donor-led investment mapping initiatives. And also within the CGIAR, related to other mapping efforts, e.g.
Started as an HarvestChoice activity, passed on to CSI and funded by CRP2/PIM. Taxing work of data curation and harmonization => move to interactive workshops instead.
Want to emphasize the role of IATI. Important platform for addressing data-sharing problems, definitions, etc.. And to push new mapping technologies. Here one of the most visual and useful product. But also DfID and now GIZ. 160 organisations have published to the IATI Registry - See more at: http://www.aidtransparency.net/about#sthash.GJ2lUhWH.dpuf
Limited set of attributes – that’s good.
Re-used elements of the Dublin prototype. Currently being tested on past/current IFPRI projects. Modified version to be shared with CORAF.
Few but key elements
Currently being tested on the HoA ASALs technologies (with FAO regional office and regional partners in the Technical Consortium)
Essential data to partners. Mix of planned CRP locations and development domains. Re-using results from the Dublin prototype. Currently using ArcGISOnline, but limitations that it doesn’t allow for spatial querying, and sharing of map data is iffy.
Answer: what technologies work where? How can CG R&D support national agricultural investment and policies? Need to keep track of the research continuum from activities to output and possibly impact.
Give a taste of what’s coming thru CRP Mapper.
Key point: district as primary spatial unit, and a series of descriptors to define locations:- activity- beneficiaries-
