Maximizing the Outcome of the ISS and “Kibo”
New Space Environment Utilization with Kibo Unique Exposed Facility
 About eight years have passed already after JAXA started the utilization of
the Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo, which means “hope” in Japanese)
in 2008.
 Today, its a harvest time for the value of the ISS and “ Kibo” utilization. It
should be changed to that JAXA and NASA increases utilization
collaboration to maximize the output/outcome from ISS/Kibo.
 JAXA’s utilization facility is available for NASA/US users under an
appropriate agreement between NASA and JAXA.
JAXA is looking forward to further collaboration in utilization as a part of
the new JP-US collaboration framework (OP3).
1
Japan-U.S. new cooperation framework
- Japan-U.S. Open Platform Partnership Program (JO-US OP3)-
 On December 22, 2015, the Japanese and U.S. governments agreed on a new
cooperation framework for the International Space Station (ISS) Program.
 Outline of JP-US OP3:
• Development of a new initiative for the operation of the ISS enhancing Japan-
U.S. cooperation
• Increased cooperation with developing spacefaring countries in the Asia-Pacific
region, possibly through utilization of ISS resources.
• Promotion of new uses for th ISS:
(a) As a platform for technology demonstration, such as support of a
Japansese technology demonstration to capture a non-functional
space object.
(b)Utilization of operational opportunities of the H-II Transfer Vehicle(HTV)
and HTV-X.
• Promotion of utilization of effective and efficient space-related technologies.

Unique Capability of Kibo – Exposed Facility
Maximizing the Outcome of the ISS and “Kibo”
New Space Environment Utilization
with Kibo Unique Exposed Facility
 Kibo has a unique Exposed Facility (EF) with an Airlock (AL) and a
Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS), and has a high capacity to
exchange experimental equipment.
 JAXA is promoting various functional missions to maximize the Kibo
utilization outcome as follows:
• Standard-class (500kg) EF mission
• Material exposure mission (ExHAM)
(2cm x10cm x 10cm or 20cm/plate, total 20 sample plates)
• Small satellite deployment mission (J-SSOD)
(CubeSat (1U-3U) and Microsat (50kg))
• Medium-class (200kg) EF mission (i-SEEP)
 These various missions are enabled only by Kibo because it has an
independent EF with AL and JEMRMS.

Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI)
 Launched by STS-127 in July 2009.
 MAXI monitors the X-ray variability once every 96 minutes for more than 1,000
X-ray sources covering the entire sky on time scales from a day to a few months.
 The Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) investigation is designed to
continuously monitor, through a systematic survey, X-ray sources and
variabilities as the International Space Station (ISS) orbits Earth.
 Besides the goal of performing a complete sky survey in the early 21st century,
MAXI finds an X-ray nova and informs it promptly to all over the world.
 This research helps to address fundamental astrophysics questions and allows
researchers to better understand the current state and evolution of our Universe.

  • 2. Maximizing the Outcome of the ISS and “Kibo” New Space Environment Utilization with Kibo Unique Exposed Facility  About eight years have passed already after JAXA started the utilization of the Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo, which means “hope” in Japanese) in 2008.  Today, its a harvest time for the value of the ISS and “ Kibo” utilization. It should be changed to that JAXA and NASA increases utilization collaboration to maximize the output/outcome from ISS/Kibo.  JAXA’s utilization facility is available for NASA/US users under an appropriate agreement between NASA and JAXA. JAXA is looking forward to further collaboration in utilization as a part of the new JP-US collaboration framework (OP3). 1
  • 3. Japan-U.S. new cooperation framework - Japan-U.S. Open Platform Partnership Program (JO-US OP3)-  On December 22, 2015, the Japanese and U.S. governments agreed on a new cooperation framework for the International Space Station (ISS) Program.  Outline of JP-US OP3: • Development of a new initiative for the operation of the ISS enhancing Japan- U.S. cooperation • Increased cooperation with developing spacefaring countries in the Asia-Pacific region, possibly through utilization of ISS resources. • Promotion of new uses for th ISS: (a) As a platform for technology demonstration, such as support of a Japansese technology demonstration to capture a non-functional space object. (b)Utilization of operational opportunities of the H-II Transfer Vehicle(HTV) and HTV-X. • Promotion of utilization of effective and efficient space-related technologies. 2
