Bosch Software Innovations
Bosch IoT Platform Strategy
๏จ Overall goal:
๏ฌ Business Success for Bosch Group in IoT with Products and Services
in the Verticals Mobility, Industry, Energy, Building
๏ฌ Interconnections and Interoperability of Devices/Services
(therefore Bosch should โback on the right (platform) horseโ)
๏จ Assumption:
๏ฌ 2-5 major IoTS platforms (in next 5-7 years)
๏ฌ At least one of them will be Open Source
๏ฌ Bosch not able to develop one of these proprietary platforms alone
and customers/partners would not accept it
๏ฌ No risk/dependency on proprietary 3rd party platform
๏จ Conclusion
๏ฌ Open Platform strategy with OSS

Editor's Notes
This is a famous quote from Marc Andreesen. It really captures the state of all industries today. Software has become so essential to all industries. Companies like Bosch, GE, Siemens, Ericsson see themselves as software companies.
The amount of software on an Airbus is 100 MLOC
If software is eating the world, open source software is eating the software industry.
Big data, Internet, Cloud, AI/ML are all open source
IoT is still fragmented. Legacy platforms, like SCADA vendors. New VC vendors and Cloud platforms.
Lots of proprietary silos. Proprietary SDKS, proprietary protocols, proprietary solutions
We need to get to an open ecosystem of IoT technology based on common frameworks, protocols and tools. Companies needs to make their money building value add solutions on top of these common technologies.
Openness does not mean no profit. A lot of profit has been made by using the common Internet technology. However, the profit has been made after a common set of Internet building blocks were in place. Ex. Apache Web Serve and Linux run the Internet.
Collaborative development โ innovation through integration, easier PoC
Developers โ learning new technology, creating new ideas, PoC
Interoperability โ integration between different vendors in the stack
Adoption โ no fees, donโt have to ask permission
Data Aggregation โ PLC development, IoT gateways/Edge devices, Protocol support
Device Management โ remote management of devices, startup, shut down, update, reconfigure
Event Management โ integration to back end
Data Analysis โ consistent data store and apis
Security โ end to end security; device authentication, code signing, access control
Digital Twin โ tools and framework for creating digital twins
