Adults spend more than
half of their waking
lives with the media.
most of today’s mass media
is wireless.
To be connected to media
meant that you had to be near
an electrical outlet.
Electronic signals have
replaced wires, freeing
people up to stay connected
no matter where or when
they want to communicate.

Three key concepts to remember
 Mass media are profit centered business.
 Technological development change the way mass media are
delivered.
 Mass media both reflect and affect politics, society and
culture.
Storability, portability and accessibility of
information are essential to today’s concept of
mass communication.
The invention of phonetic writing in 1000 B.C.
was considered the first information
communications revolution.
The invention of movable type in 1445 marked
the second information communications
revolution.
The invention of digital computers in 1951
ushered in the third information communications
revolution.
The new world of mass media uses wireless
communication technology, an intricate webbed
network of may different types of communication
systems.
The development of communications technology
directly affects the speed with which a society
evolves.
Mass media both reflect and affect politics, society and culture
• The media are political, social, and cultural institutions that both
reflect and affect the society in which they operate.
• Multiplying sources of information and entertainment mean that today,
very few people share identical mass media environments.
Communication is the act of sending ideas and
attitudes from one person to another.
Intrapersonal communication means
communication within one person.
Interpersonal communication means
communication between two people.
Mass communication from one’s person or group
of persons through a transmitting device to a large
audiences or market.
By definition, mass communication is
information that is made available to a large
audience quickly.
There are eight mass media business: books,
newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio,
movies, television and the internet.
How The Communication
Process Work
Media take advantage of
digital delivery Today’s information network uses broadcast,
telephone, cable, satellite and computer
technology.
The traditional delivery system for information
and entertainment is primarily a one way system.
The ability to talk back to receive as well as
transmit messages makes the telephone
interactive.
Today’s communication network is a two way,
interactive system.
