In this talk we report on our experience with Redis-on-Flash (RoF)—a recently introduced product that uses SSDs as a RAM extension to dramatically increase the effective dataset capacity that can be stored on a single server. This talk provides the first in-depth RoF system performance characterization: we consider different use cases (varying both RAM-to-disk access ratio and object size), and compare SATA-based RoF, NVMe-based RoF, and all-RAM Redis deployments. We show that the superior performance of NVMe drives in terms of both latency and peak bandwidth makes them a particularly good fit for RoF use cases. Specifically, we show that backing RoF with NVMe drives can deliver more than 2 million operations per second with sub-millisecond latency on a single server.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham gives scientists and researchers a massive, on-demand, virtual storage cloud using OpenStack and Ceph for less than $0.41 per gigabyte. This is a session at the OpenStack summit given by Kamesh Pemmaraju at Dell and John Paul at University of Alabama. This will detail how the university IT staff deployed a private storage cloud infrastructure using the Dell OpenStack cloud solution with Dell servers, storage, networking and OpenStack, and Inktank Ceph. After assessing a number of traditional storage scenarios, the University partnered with Dell and Inktank to architect a centralized cloud storage platform that was capable of scaling seamlessly and rapidly, was cost-effective, and that could leverage a single hardware infrastructure for the OpenStack compute and storage environment.

Scorpio Multi-node Server is an ODCC project sponsored by China Mobile. It is a 4U size server chassis with 8 compute nodes or 4 storage nodes in maximum. It can also be mixture of different kind of servers, like 4 compute nodes and 2 storage nodes. Compared with traditional ATCA or Blade server, Multi-node Server's advantages include: 1.It is easier and cheaper to extend. 2.It has more choices for compute and storage nodes combination. 3.It is easier to maintain by engineers. 4. Even higher density. 5. 4U is more flexible than 10~14U Blade server. OPNFV develops an integrated and tested open source platform that can be used to build NFV functionality. We are running OPNFV releases Colorado on Scorpio Multi-node smoothly and will try recent Danube on it in China Mobile’s Novonet (Next Generation Network) laboratory. This presentation will introduce how OPNFV and Scorpio Multi-node server fit perfectly together. It's a fully open implementation of open software and open hardware.

In China Mobile, distributed big data clusters are built by branch companies in each province for their unique requirements. Meanwhile, we have built a centralized Hadoop cluster with scale more than 1600 nodes, on which we collect data from dozens of distributed clusters and make analysis for our business. In this session, we will introduce the architecture of the centralized Hadoop cluster and experience of constructing and tuning this large scale Hadoop cluster. Key points are as follows: 1. About Ambari: we improve Ambari with features like supporting HDFS Federation and Ambari HA , improving its performance and enabling it to support up to 1600 nodes. 2.
