cases accompanied by a primary or secondary title of “CHRO”
2
*Figures add up to greater than 100% because the title “Chief” is often included along with a level designation such as EVP, SVP, etc. Such titles are included in both categories (Chief + EVP or SVP).
**Human Resources included Human Capital and Labor, but not People.
Titles are often imprecise since different sources of data show different titles.

Female representation is well above the norm for executive positions.
Only 23% of the Fortune 1000 C–Suite is comprised of female executives.

gender-diverse C-suite
position, with 66% female vs
34% male incumbents

- 6. Almost two-thirds spent majority of their career in HR; however a large number
had general management or cross-functional experience as well
5
Of the 23% who came from outside
HR, majority (13/21) had general
management/ operations or multi-
functional experience. There were a
few who spent majority of their career
in a function like Finance/ Accounting

64% of CHROs have spent the
majority of their career in Human
Resources, 13% in HR as well as
non-HR functions, and 23% had
majority of their career outside HR. • HR leader for a BU/ Region (53%)
• Non HR (30%)
• Talent Management (13%)
• Rewards (3%)
- 7. Two-thirds were internal hires; Only a quarter of external hires were
from the same industry; Vast majority spent their entire career in the US
6
• This includes promotions as well as
lateral moves into the CHRO position
within the company.
• Of the 34% external hires, a majority
came from the top HR job in another
company.
Internal Hires Same Industry Entire career in US
• For this analysis, we only considered
31 CHROs who were brought in from
the outside.
• Only 8 of 31 (26%) were from the same
industry. There was no specific pattern
among the rest ... there were moves
from Professional Services to Retail,
from Pharmaceuticals to Financial
Services etc., reinforcing the industry-
agnostic nature of this position.
• This only includes a job located outside US
(not having international responsibilities)
• Perhaps not surprising since the US F100
includes several companies that are largely
domestic (e.g. retail, healthcare).
• Interestingly, of the 10 CHROs that did
have international experience, 7 were newly
appointed i.e. in the job <2 years.

- 8. Majority of CHROs are new in their jobs
7
Across industries
The average tenure is 4.6 years. The tenure range is very wide (0.2 to 18.8
years), which might be expected since this role has a combination of long-
service as well as newly appointed CHROs.
Distribution
The distribution of tenure is very left-skewed. 40% of CHROs have been in the
job less than 2 years. Half of them them have been there 3.1 years or less.
The industry distribution is also surprising. Technology has the highest average
(as well as highest min and max) tenures while Oil and Gas has the lowest.
Newly appointed CHROs
Newly appointed CHROs (i.e. those in the job <2 years) are overwhelmingly
female (72%), which implies that the gender skew in the role is likely to continue.
The average age of newly appointed CHROs is 53, which is close to the overall
average (54).

- 11. About this research
With a dramatic increase in the importance and stature of the
CHRO position, we wanted to answer a simple question: “Who
are the CHROs of the largest companies in the US?”
We looked at public-domain data from company websites,
LinkedIn, as well as reputable news sources such as
Bloomberg. Our research was limited to demographic
information such as time in position, age, gender, education, etc.
since that could be obtained from the public domain sources.
Key factors that drive the CHROs success (such as leadership
and decision-making styles, relationships with CEOs and peers
etc.) are unfortunately not available in the public domain,
although firms such as Korn Ferry and Russell Reynolds have
done extensive research on this topic.
In a few cases, we made inferences to arrive at data points e.g.
where age was not available, we inferred it based on year of
graduation and/ or year of first job.
The research was conducted in January 2019. Any CHRO
moves in 2019 are not reflected in the data.
This research is intended for informational purposes only. Due to
the nature of this type of social research, there can be cases
where the data, or our inference thereof, is not accurate. No
warranty is provided or implied on the accuracy of this data.
