Laura Hollinshead,
University of Derby
This presentation will provide an overview of the approach the University of Derby has taken to strategically embed digital capability development within the organisation and ensuring that the digital experience of students and staff helps to guide the enhancements needed to support the development of digital capabilities. It will then discuss how the university plans to build on this and the recent large scale shift towards digital learning, in order to encourage programmes of study to closely consider the need to embed digital capability development in order to meet the needs of local employers and reduce the digital skills gap which has widened with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Created resources to support people to understand digital capabilities
Staff course which gets people to think about their digital skills and how they are helping students to build theirs
Embedded in DPR process to think of targets related to this area
Part of recruitment guidance to ask interview question around digital capabilities
Student course which gets them to think about the digital skills they need for their future career
Jisc Discovery Tool embedded in these
Developing the digital infrastructure through data gathered via the Digital Insights Survey to ensure this supports staff and students to develop their digital capabilities
Then it all got a bit sped up
Rapidly upskilling staff and students
Shared examples of good practice
As mentioned in the keynote we ran a course over the summer for all academic staff which helped to establish the educational model and pedagogic principles which sit behind this
The course modelled the practice and the different Technlogies available
Also a lot of skills based training around the technologies which support the delivery of this, collaborate, Teams, Padlet, Discussion boards, Poll Everywhere
Practice becoming more established
Blended with 3 hours face-to-face delivery a week
Staff and students have developed their digital capabilities
We don’t want our academic staff and students to waste this
However, it has also made clear the digital divide that exists and we need to think carefully about how we help to address this
The rest of the world has also moved on
Increase in people wanting to work from home
Businesses seeing that productivity could still be maintained
More online collaborative working with co-workers and clients
Development of online practices within companies
So what does the future hold…

What do employers want?
What can we learn from them about the practices which they have introduced during this time
How can we prepare our students for this
Research informed – research project exploring the experience of students and academic staff so we can better support them and ensure practices which have workled well are carried on into the delivery of the curriculum
