- My name is Christine Percival and I am the Digital Fluency Manager at Lancaster University. Today I would like to give a brief background on what we have done so far to develop staff digital capabilities as well as share our future plans This is the first time I’ve done this style of presentation, so let’s hope I can keep to time.
- Our Digital Lancaster strategy has identified staff and student digital fluency (their digital capabilities) as one of the key enablers for the University to achieve it’s overall goal of being a globally significant university, consistently in the top 10 Universities in the uk and top 100 in the world.
- We created a one page version of the Digital fluency framework, based on Jisc’s six elements of digital capability. It has been useful for us to understand digital fluency and we have used it as a basis for a number of activities and projects, including: identifying the gaps in the current training provision
- We’re offering a greater range of skills development to staff and students e.g. Mind mapping, online surveys, video production, The taught sessions are shorter , task orientated sessions We’ve opened training up to both staff and students We’re also offering 1:1 short sessions And Microsoft Office Specialist qualifications for self study
- In addition to the taught sessions, we’ve been busy developing online training courses These were developed in Xerte and embedded into Moodle, initially aimed at students, but staff are doing them as well. We are offering a digital skills certificate to people who complete at least one course from each of the 5 main elements of the DF framework.
- we’ve been running student digital projects, based around the digital fluency framework, for the past 2 years, where students work with an academic in their department to develop digital uses in their teaching and learning. staff are now sharing their experiences, lessons learned and their outcomes to help inspire others at the University.
- we piloted the first draft of the Jisc Digital Capabilities tool with some Library staff, where they spent some time looking holistically at their digital day, what skills they have, what technologies they use and why. Outcomes were discussed and mapped against the framework But at the time we didn’t have enough resource to help people develop the skills identified
- We’ve recently had 2 new projects approved – getting staff development online, and as Faculty eLearning teams are already supporting teaching staff, A project on digital skills for professional services staff. E.g. staff from Finance, Facilities, Student services. So for the rest of the slides, I’ll focus on our plan of action for these.
- The Staff Development online project has a few parts, but overall it is about getting all the staff development opportunities that are available across the University accessible from one, easy to find place Last year we did something similar with the learning support services for students (as you can see on the slide), and it has made the offerings so much more visible to students and staff.
- The design needs to bring together the opportunities that are available, if you know where to look. For example, HR website has Management, leadership courses, the ISS website has digital skills training, Facilities has health and safety. We also want to look at how the website could be tailored to particular job roles, teams or career pathways.
- A few courses have already been identified as beneficial online resources e.g. Welcome to Lancaster for new starters, Health and Safety courses and the project would include work on delivering these online courses. Luckily we have some materials for these already, so we’re not starting from scratch.
- The project will include developing a standard mechanism for recording staff attendance at training and automatically record completion of online course/assessment We also want it to generate some useful training reports we’ve already started the ball rolling on this element of the project with the IT development teams.
- To work on this project we are currently advertising for a Grade 5 training assistant – with 8 month contract who will work closely with a number of colleagues to get this done. We envisage at some point there will be a phase 2, as there will be further course development identified as part of this project. Hoping to start this project in the new year.
- This second project aims to identify digital skills requirements of Professional Services staff and prioritise the creation of new resources. We also want to work with staff to build their confidence in using digital, helping them learn how to best help themselves and where to find information when they need it
- To help identify existing digital skills we want to develop a self-assessment tool. We considered using the Jisc Digital Capabilities discovery tool. However, we wanted the results to provide support suitable for Lancaster e.g. focus on key digital skills, not be overwhelming, suggest MOS rather than ECDL.
- We’re thinking the tool could be a task based assessment which also identifies skills they are interested in for career development e.g., I can do xxx, then tick agree/disagree/I need it for my job/I’d like to know for a future role. We’re hoping the questions will identify type of role e.g. manual, manager, so we can filter relevant questions.
- Using the tool we develop, we plan on running workshops, to identify skills gaps, Provide support resource work out extra online resources needed start to build skills profiles for different roles we’ll also need to work with Line managers across University to help us understand the skills their team needs.
- Our Training team is really keen to be involved in the project, so we’ll need to prioritise existing commitments, with some elements being back filled by a graduate intern for 12 months. The successful applicant will be working alongside our other 2 graduate interns on online course development, delivering short sessions, 1:1s, and helping to maintain the knowledgebase.
- This project has other possibilities, For example, it would be good to get it integrated within the Performance Development Reviews for staff And if we can start to build a knowledgebase of digital skills for different roles, it could help line managers identify the digital skills their team might need, Or get digital skills requirements in Job descriptions,
