2. What’s Jisc’s role in the broader
Digital Library services landscape?

3. The current library service offer
Jisc provides above campus
library services that save HE
members time and money
when managing the life-cycle
of the information resources
they own or license – from
physical assets of unique and
special collections to the
latest online journal articles.

4. The current library service offer
»Services have developed organically and for the most part
separately from one another over time
»This has resulted in efficiencies for Jisc and for our members, who
have to navigate multiple services to undertake overlapping tasks
»Not all services serve every Jisc member

5. Trends in the wider marketplace
»Change and churn will continue
»Changes are technology-driven
(not user demand led)
»Highly disruptive to traditional scholarly
communications paradigms
»Competitive dynamics among vendors
lead to poor supply chain developments
and pricing models for content
»A number of larger ‘walled garden’
library systems are emerging

6. As a result…
»It’s not in the best interest of commercial players to ensure data
flows virtuously in and out of their systems
»So local library services are less responsive, which means our
members don’t always get value from the information assets they
invest in

7. Our role – what members told us
» Option 1: Withdraw – market is healthy.Wind down its role ☐
» Option 2: Conquer – fill all roles in the competitive landscape via partnership, acquisition
or competition ☐
» Option 3: Concentrate – Select a strategic subset of systems roles that have coherence for
themselves, thus competing against other providers for some business lines whilst
avoiding doing so for others
» Option 4:Triage – Identify gaps and challenges in the existing systems and resources with
specific reference to UK practices, and therefore seeks to [...] complement existing
providers, thus making critical yet diverse contributions, sometimes with limited life
expectancy

10. Powering research and learning
We aim to ensure UK researchers
and learners can find the best
copy of the item they need and
that they can access it.
This might be by linking through
to a digital copy that they are
entitled to view or via an
inter-library loan.

12. Discussion points
»A National Digital Library? UK Academic Library? What terminology
is useful for shaping our vision and roadmap?
»Broadening our scope. How could/should we serve members in
Further education, Specialist institutions, Consortia, International
collaborations?
»New bold, innovative goals for the future?
