18. The Risks
• The state/age of the
ducts/cables
• Compatibility of
old/new glass
• Tight signal loss budget
spec
• We’ll end up with an
inferior network
• Information inaccurate
• We might disconnect
large parts of campus
for an indeterminate
period of time
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
19. The Risks
• Reduced network
resilience during the
works – other works
delayed
• Damage to new
infrastructure as the car
park is constructed
• Reputational impact
• Operational/Business
impact
• Reduction in quality of
student (and staff)
experience
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
20. The Risks
• Exam period started in
mid-January
• The weather – cold
• Interim works become a
permanent solution
• Developments planned
elsewhere on campus
may shortly supersede
these works
• Etc, etc, etc….
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
21. Learning points
• Senior colleagues might not be as super-
intelligent as you’d assume they are
• They get a huge amount of info about a wide
range of things – assume they have memories
like goldfish
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
22. • “It’s not what I’d have done”
• ”It’s what I’d describe as a ‘high-risk
strategy’”
• “Are you ******* insane?”
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
23. In the meantime…..
• Upgrade edge switches,
so we can migrate to IP
phones, negating the
need to worry about
the copper multi-pair
cables
• Install new resilient
duct/cable to Medical
School, divert STH
services via that; greatly
reducing risk
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
24. In the meantime…..
• A new leased
connection was
installed to the student
residences site
• Identify other cables
that we no longer need;
• Rationalise use of
cables on matching
routes, freeing cables
for disposal
29/03/2018 © The University of Sheffield
31. • 30 cables relocated
• 13 car park
• 17 pavement
• 19 new cables across
car park
• 4 new cables to local
buildings
• All with 24 cores
• 1,944 new splices
• 350 new patches
• 704 end-to-end links
• All affected fibre links
have at least two
additional connections,
many had four, some
more
