9. Technology Trends
• As public Wi-Fi availability grows, the
population increasingly expects to be in
constant communication with their work or
social networks, wherever they are
• Global mobile data consumption has
increased by 79%percent between Q3
2017 and Q3 2018—the highest growth
rate since 2013
• Icomera is experiencing this trend first-
hand, we have more than doubled data
delivery to our customers in the last
three years. We don’t expect to see this
slow down anytime soon.

11. Arriva Group, Nottingham University and Eduroam
Arriva approached Icomera to deliver an
Eduroam sign-on for the University Buses
in Nottingham. The success criteria was
simple:
Had to use our existing platform.
Offer service for students.
Manage risk and cost for Arriva as
well as passengers
12. Mobility in Vehicles
Icomera provides onboard passenger Wi-Fi and becoming
more important in todays society is general Internet
connectivity.
We do this with our own specially designed systems for
limited bandwidth and limited connectivity is a challenge –
i.e. No Broadband, No cables!
Some of the key challenges in mobile internet access are
Connection reliability
Data Cost
Security and protecting the system
13. Current Fleet Background
Arriva has a fleet of 10 vehicles
servicing the area for the Nottingham
Universities. Each one has it’s own
route assigned. Each vehicle fitted with
an Icomera M Series router that serves
Wi-Fi for all passengers.
Icomera has it’s own authentication and
captive portal system servicing our
entire estate, therefore a new solution
was needed.
14. Arriva Group, Nottingham University and Eduroam
To solve the problem we added a second access point “Eduroam” and network
bridge onto the existing on board M Series device, this allowed us to offer an
additional network to the traditional passenger access point.
3G, 4G,
WAN, 5G…
etc.
15. Arriva Group, Nottingham University and Eduroam
This allowed us to then add a secondary authentication point using 802.11x
The secondary radius instance is linked (“federated”) directly to Eduroam’s
authentication services allowing access to the internet and other services once
authenticated.
3G, 4G,
WAN, 5G…
etc.

Icomera’s Vehicle Connectivity delivers a fast, reliable
and secure mobile data connection to and from a
moving vehicle.
• Our technology maximises the stability, uptime and
data throughput of a connection by intelligently
utilising all available communications networks
data networks.

17. Icomera’s solutions provide transport operators with the framework and foundations required for developing a
truly interconnected eco-system of onboard digital systems and services, running as virtual applications on
the Icomera router.
Virtual applications reduce the need for additional hardware on board the vehicle
• Easier to deploy new functionality and new services
• Lower costs for the transport operator.
Multiple, resource-intensive applications such as
Passenger Wi-Fi, Infotainment, Condition Monitoring
and Real-time CCTV can co-exist simultaneously as
part of a single solution.
